Gene Arthur Butcher, age 71 of Van Lear passed away Wednesday February 26, at his home. Born October 1, 1942 in Johnson County to the late Ashley Butcher and Nora Webb Butcher. He is also preceded in death by two sisters, Rose Marie Hierra and Jewell Sue Butcher; amd one brother, Harold Butcher. He is survived by his wife, Patsy Lois May Butcher of Van Lear; one son, Ricky Butcher of Covington, KY; three daughters, Sherrie Anderson of Baldwin, Mich, Sheila Morrison of Milford, Ohio, Vonda Stidham of Van Lear; six brothers, Chester Butcher, Randall Butcher, Darrell Butcher, Foley Butcher, Sheldon Butcher, Charles Butcher all of Van Lear; two sisters, Lorene Hall of Wabash, Indiana, Norina Hackworth of Prestonsburg; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and several step great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held Sunday March 2, 2014 at 2PM in the chapel of the Phelps and Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Butcher Family Cemetery at Van Lear. Frank Dunkle will officiate. Friends may visit the funeral home Friday from 5-9PM and all day Saturday. Arrangements are by the Phelps and Son Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Floyd Jude, age 65 of Warfield passed away Thursday afternoon at Pikeville Medical Center. Born May 19, 1948 in Martin County to the late Harrison Jude and Ollie Maynard Jude. He is preceded in death by his parents and many brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, Menalee Luther Jude of Warfield; one son, Floyd (Estella Stafford) Jude Jr. of Lovely; two daughters, Misty Jude of Lee County, KY, Breezy (Jason Mollett) Jude of Rock House; three brothers, Joseph (Judy) Jude of Waverly, Ohio, Charles E. (Mabel) Jude of Hode, Lacey (Gladys) Jude of Huntlyville, KY; two sisters, Virgie Fletcher of Tomahawk, Vicki (Wendall) Luther of Lovely; many nieces and nephews and eleven grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 12pm at the Golden Springs Church at Stonecoal, WV with burial to follow in the Evans & Muncy Cemetery at Emily Creek. Billy Messer, Andy Jude and Maurice Mills will officiate. Friends may visit the church after 1pm on Saturday and until time of service on Sunday. Arrangements are by the Phelps and Son Funeral Home of Inez.

Jimmy Collins, age 62 of Warfield, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at his home. Born February 22, 1951 in Martin County, he was the son of the late Jeff Collins and Ruth Jude Collins. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, John Bud Collins; and three sisters, Lucille Raines, Rose Patrick, and Darlene Preece. He is survived by four daughters, Barbara Thomas, Amber Molihan, and Jodi Collins all of Columbus, Ohio and Bobbie Lee Messer of Dunlow, West Virginia; one brother, Ronald Collins of Warfield, KY; seven sisters, Becky Patrick of Inez, KY, Leatha Smith and Ima Parsons both of Warfield, Ina Grace Yount of Missouri, Mary Cline of Lovely, Debra Collins and Odessa Fields both of Columbus; and eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be 1pm Friday, February 21, 2014 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Robinson, Scott and Friends Cemetery at Meathouse. Friends may visit the funeral home from 10am to 1pm Friday prior to the service. Neal Patrick will officiate. Former Paintsville Football Coach Walter James Brugh Sr., age 87, of Van Lear, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at St. Marys Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia.
Coach Brugh was a lifelong resident of Paintsville, Ky. Born to Frank and Margret Hammond Brugh on July 7, 1926. Walter was one of eleven children. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Lacy Brugh, a sister Mary Cummings, and by his loving wife, the sweetheart of his life, Nancy Ward Brugh.
Walter attended Paintsville High School through his junior year when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon completion of his three year tour he returned to complete his senior year at age 21. He graduated from Paintsville High School in 1947. He went on to attend the Citadel, in Charleston, South Carolina, where he played football for four years. After graduation he returned to his hometown of Paintsville to become an assistant football coach under James Wheeler, where he served for five years before taking over as head coach in 1956. He led the Tigers to victory as head coach for 39 years and continued after retirement to coach and mentor young football players for the remainder of his life.
Coach Brugh is survived by his four Children: son Jim (Bonnie) Brugh of Prairieville, Louisiana; daughter Chandra Alfaro of Sarasota, Florida; son Mike (Faye) Brugh of Mobile, Alabama; and daughter Beth (Ippy) Slone of Van Lear, Kentucky. He also is survived by his four grandchildren: Christopher Alfaro, Alyssa Alfaro, Billy Slone, and Whitney Slone.
Coach Brugh has been bestowed many honors during his life time. He was a World War II Veteran, a Kentucky Colonel, a Master Mason, a lifetime member of the Kentucky High School Coaches Association, a lifetime member of the Lifetime Honor Roll at Paintsville High School, a member of the KHSAA Sports Hall of Fame, to name a few.
Coach Brugh was a lot of things to a lot of people, but most of all he was known to us as the “The Big Blue Legend”.
Funeral services will be 1:00pm Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the Paintsville High School Gymnasium with burial to follow in the Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville. Larry Vickers will officiate. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 12pm to 9pm Friday and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the High School. Russell Goble left this world to be with God on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Cornerstone Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia. Born February 22, 1930, he was the son of the late I.D. Goble and Bessie Delong Goble. Russell was one of thirteen children. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by seven brothers, Cecil, Ira, Linzie, Elza, Earnest, George, and Nathan Goble; four sisters, Sara Sword, Fannie Buskirk, Menzie Hill, and Emma Workman. He is survived and sadly missed by his wife fifty six years, Margie (Harless) Goble; and children, Sheila Hammond, Lorraine Lowe, and Russell Jr. (Tomika) Goble all of Debord, Kentucky and Donna (Greg) Jones of Van Lear, Kentucky; one sister, Cora Crabtree of Portsmouth, Ohio. Russell and Margie were blessed with six grandchildren, Heather and Haley Hammond, Ryan Lowe, Lauren, Paige and Weston Goble.
Russell was a faithful member of the Beechfork Church of Christ. He was a retired auto body repairman.
The family would like to thank all of Russell's faithful friends who's visits he greatly valued, with a special mention to Frankie, Jimmy, Buford, and Harvey. Our loss is truly Heaven's gain.

Russell L. Messer, age 73 of Kermit, WV passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at his home surrounded by family and friends . Born August 19, 1940 in Mingo County, he was the son of the late Carter Messer and Nancy Myrtle Messer. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three sisters, Fannie Baisden, Gracie Baisden, and Vada Hodge; two brothers, Arland Messer and Dewey Messer. He was the Pastor at the Old Jennies Creek United Baptist Church for over 36 years and was retired from Columbia Gas.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Melvina (Perry) Messer; two daughters, Shawna (Marty) Crank both of Kermit, WV and Tonia (Dave) Fletcher of Warfield, KY; three grand daughters, Rinna Paige Crank of Kermit, Katie Lee Hensley and McKenna Grace Fletcher of Warfield, KY; two sisters, Eliza Messer of Kermit, WV and Dorothy Baisden of Dingess, WV; two brothers, Ray Messer and Dan Messer both of Kermit, WV. Russell will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him. He never met a stranger and Heaven has gained a new angel.
Funeral services will be 12pm Friday, February 7, 2014 at the Old Jennies Creek United Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Carter Messer Cemetery on Jennies Creek. Arlene Wilson Markin, age 74 of Georgetown, Kentucky formerly of Martin County, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Saint Joseph Health Care Facilty in Lexington. Born February 22, 1939 in Martin County, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Dora Beverly Wilson. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Reuel Wilson and Ivan Wilson. She is survived by two sons, Thomas Markin of Stamping Ground, Kentucky and Mel Allen Markin of Lovely, Kentucky; four daughters, Sharon Veihl of Georgetown, Kentucky, Theresa Hileman of Columbus, Ohio, Jodi Reeves of Lexington, Kentucky and Tonya Jones of Florence, Kentucky; six brothers, Howard Wilson of Pilgrim, Kentucky, Joseph Wilson of Stambaugh, Kentucky, Lowell Wilson of Pilgrim, Kentucky, Terry Wilson of Inez, Kentucky, Gary Wilson of Pilgrim, Kentucky and Anthony Wilson of Louisa, Kentucky; five sisters, Ernestine Spradlin and Delia Howard both of Newark, Ohio, Naomi Coleman of Stambaugh, Kentucky, Lois Doone of Newark, Ohio, and Rosemary Levisay also of Newark, Ohio; fourteen grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren..

Lorene (Muncy) Jude, age 78 of Pilgrim, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at Highland Regional Medical Center in Prestosnburg. Born October 2, 1935 at Pilgrim, KY, she was the daughter of the late Homer and Grace (Maynard) Muncy. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Sonny Jude, Jr; three sons, Les Paul Jude, Mitchell Jude and Lionell Jude; two daughters, Geraldine Howard and Pamela McCloud; two grand sons, Philip Ray Howard and K. McCloud; and one sister, Irene Lowe. She is survived by the following children, Anita Maynard, Ryan Jude, Harlan Jude of Pilgrim, KY, Randy Jude of Columbus, Ohio, Darrell Jude of Inez, KY, Ronald Jude of Warfield, KY, Doug Jude of Inez; brothers, Lowell Muncy of Ulysses, KY, Philip Muncy, Raymond Muncy, and Homer Muncy, Jr all of Pilgrim; one sister, Becky Fields of Inez; fifteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Lorene had been a Christian for many years. She was baptized at the Wolf Creek Church of God.
Funeral services will be 1pm Friday, February 7, 2014 at the Sidney Old Regular Baptist Church at the mouth of Pigeon Roost, with burial to follow in the Jude Family Cemetery at Big Petercave, Pilgrim. Coreena (Rene) Marcum, age 76 of Pilgrim, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2014 at Trinity Health Care in Williamson. Born August 15, 1937 in Chatteroy, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Olla (Dowden) Robertson. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Harold Marcum (February 22, 2013); one daughter, Brenda Blevins; two sisters, and seven brothers. She is survived by two daughters and three sons in law, Linda (George) Blevins of Pilgrim, KY, Connie (Bill) Thomas of Lovely, KY, and Johnny Blevins of Beauty, KY; two grand daughters, six grand sons, five great grand daughters, six great grand sons, grand daughters in law and grand sons in law, as well as many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by family and friends, too numerous to mention. Also the nurses and staff at Trinity Health Care at Williamson, West Virginia and the Martin County Health Care Facility.
