     Judy Howell, age 66 of Pilgrim, passed away Thursday, July 31, 2014 at her home. Born July 12, 1948 in Logan, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Arnold Ball and Ruth Chaffins. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Howell; and two brothers. She is survived by two sons, Bobby Howell of Pilgrim and Tanual Howell also of Pilgrim; four brothers, Tom Chaffins of Warfield, Walter Chaffins, Jr of Blaine, Millard Chaffins of Louisa, and Zane Chaffins of Tennessee; six sisters, Helen Horn, Pamela Houston, and Deloris Chaffins all of Blaine, Francis Chaffins of Hazard, Sara Prater of West Liberty, and Mildred Chaffins of Mt. Sterling.

Funeral services will be 1:00pm Saturday, August 2, 2014 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Howell Cemetery at Pilgrim. Jimmy Stanley and Bobby Mullins will officiate. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 5-9pm Friday and until the time of service on Saturday. Reese Messer, age 55 of Kermit, passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Williamson Memorial Hospital in Williamson, West Virginia. Born February 5, 1959 in Kermit, he was the son of Sinda Muncy Messer of Columbus, Ohio and the late Lafayette Messer. In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by two brohters, Lafayette Messer Jr and Tommy Messer. He is survived by his mother, Sinda Messer; his wife, Phyllis Marcum Messer; one son, Harrison Messer of Lovely, KY , William Messer of Kermit, WV, Christina Messer of Kermit, Lark Muncy of Kermit, and Shane Marcum also of Kermit; six grandchildren, Kamerin Messer, Brennix Messer, Jasmine Messer, Emily Messer, Nicholas Speer, and Barylee Marcum; brothers and sisters, Songye Perry of Kermit, Lois and Alan Mann of Columbus, Patty Thompson of Columbus, Harrison and Connie Messer of Jackson, Ohio, Virginia Baisden of Columbus, Lilly Stoll also of Columbus; and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews also survive.

 

 

 

Funeral services will be 11am Saturday, August 2, 2014 at the Old Jennies Creek United Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Hodge Cemetery on Jennies Creek. Jerry Newsome and Freddie Messer, Jr will officiate. Friends may visit the church after 1oam Thursday and all day Friday. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.

      Goldie Fields, age 85 of Louisa, passed away Monday, July 28, 2014 at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. Born September 30, 1928 in Pike County, she was the daughter of the late Millard and Maudie Howell Adams. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Fields. Goldie is survived by four sons, John Fields of Louisa, KY, Carl Fields of West Unity, Ohio, James Fields of Taylor, Michigan, and Andy Fields of  Tecumseh, Michigan; one son in law, Roger Calhoun of Taylor, Michigan; one sister, Ida Price of Waynesville, North Carolina; one brother, George Adams of Anderson, South Carolina; sixteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren also survive.

     Funeral services will be 11am Friday, August 1, 2014 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Fields Cemetery at Pilgrim. Clyde Lewis will officiate. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home after 5pm Wednesday and after 9am Thursday.      Vadie Scott, age 61 of Pilgrim, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014 at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. Born April 21, 1953 in Martin County, she was the daughter of the late Jim Jude and Madie Howell. In addition to her parents, Vadie is preceded in death by one sister, Linda Gail Preece; and one grandchild, Benjamin Grady Scott. She is survived by her husband, James Luther Scott; two sons, Curtis and his wife, Kara Scott of Inez and Dennis Scott of Pilgrim; two brothers, Phillip Jude of Pilgrim and Roger Jude of Blaine, KY; two grandchildren, Alison Taylor Scott and Hannah Nicole Scott.

 

     Funeral services will be 1pm Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at the Sidney Old Regular Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Robinson, Scott and Friends Cemetery at Pilgrim. Tom Dials, Kenneth B.      Brenda G. Evans, age 51 of Inez, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014 at her home. Born July 19, 1963 in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Edith Blackburn Evans of Inez and the late Roy E. Evans. In addition to her mother Edith Evans, Brenda is survived by one brother, Charles Evans; and two sisters, Joann Daniels of Wilsondale, West Virginia and Carol Nemo of Savannah, Georgia.

    Elmer “El” Lee Howell, age 71 of Inez, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg. Born May 21, 1943 in Martin County, he was the son of the late William Boyd and Vistie Varies Howell. In addition to his parent he is preceded in death by eight brothers, Jonah, Toney, James Robert, Millard, Ester, Boyd Jr., Clinton, and Hayes Howell; three sisters, Vadie Maynard, Sadie Maynard, and Madie Howell. He is survived by his wife, Gayle Pauley Howell; one son, Randall Gordon Howell; one daughter, Sheri Arms; one sister, Karen Sammons; four grandchildren, Taylor Howell, Amber Arms, Jacob Howell, Diane Harmon; three great grandchildren, Wesley Thomas Walpole, Alexis Harmon, and Aiden Gonzalez. Elmer was a member of the Sidney Old Regular Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held 1pm, Tuesday, July 22, 2014 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Howell Cemetery at Inez. Richard Staton will officiate.      Thelma Richmond, age 82, of Van Lear, passed away Monday, July 14, 2014 at Mountain Manor of Paintsville. Born April 12, 1932 in Floyd County to the late James and Eva Setser Delong. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Joel Richmond(1968); two sons, James and Chester Richmond; five brothers, Marvin, Ernest, Edward, Alton, and Elmer Delong; and one sister, Glady Delong. She is survived by six daughters; Debbie (Jerry) Hatfield of Van Lear, Linda (Terry) Newberry of Van Lear, Eva (Ernie) McKenzie of Van Lear, Wanda (Calvin) Goble of Van Lear, Sharon Burchett of Sitka, Glenda (Wendell) Goble of Auxier; one brother, Arland (Faye) Delong of Louisa; and a special friend, Jimmy Goble. Fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held 1pm Thursday, July 17, 2014 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Richmond Family Cemetery at Van Lear. Roger Goble will officiate.      David B. Castle, age 54, of Mt. Gilead died Friday evening July 11, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born in Mt. Gilead on July 7, 1960 to Elmer “Sonny” and Sally D. ( Hayes ) Castle.

David was a 1979 graduate of Mt. Gilead High School, attended The Ohio State University, and graduated in 1985 from DeVry Institute of Technology as an Electronics Technician. He worked at HPM as an electrician for ten years and then at NAPA as a counter man in their stores in Mt. Gilead, Marengo and Mansfield. David was a” true sports fan”. He loved playing competitive softball and was on many championship teams. His favorite basketball team was the University of Kentucky Wildcats. He enjoyed fishing and his best memories were of his trips made to Canada in search of the “big one”. David introduced his brother, Elmer Dean, to the game of golf and they shared many memorable rounds together.

David is survived by his mother, Sally D. ( Hayes ) Castle; brother, Elmer Dean Castle; and special niece and nephew , Areonna M. Keller and Domenik L. Keller.

David was preceded in death by his father Elmer “Sonny” Castle; paternal grandparents, Noah and Katie C. Castle and maternal grandparents Gus Hayes, Sr. and Jessie Virginia ( Daniels ) Hayes

Charles “Ed” Blackburn, age 60 of East Point, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Highland Regional in Prestonsburg. Born February 22, 1954 in Floyd County, he was the son of Estalene Hatfield Blackburn and the late Tom Blackburn. In addition to his father, he preceded in death by one brother, Michael Keith Blackburn. He is survived by his mother, Estalene Blackburn; two brothers, Larry Blackburn of East Point, KY and Lloyd Hayden of Van Lear, KY; three sisters, Glenna Baldridge of Warsaw, Indiana, Vickie Callahan of Van Lear, KY, and Alice Puckett of Meally, KY; and a special niece, Melissa Gamble; and several other nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be 11am Friday, July 11, 2014 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Blackburn Family Cemetery at East Point.      Martha Karen Frazier, age 67 of Flat Gap passed away Monday morning at her home. She was born January 13, 1947 in Johnson County to the late Alfred Frazier and Alka Meade Frazier. She is also preceded in death by one son, Ronnie "Bub" Music and one brother, Johnny Wayne Frazier. She is survived by one son, Jonathan Michael Orf of Florence, KY; one daughter, Roka Music – Lask of Austin, TX; two brothers, Jimmy Frazier of Staffordsville, KY, Frankie Frazier of Hager Hill, KY; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive.

     Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 10, at 11AM in the chapel of the Phelps and Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Staffordsville Church Cemetery.      Curtis Young, age 83 of Inez, Kentucky passed away peacefully at his sons home in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was the son of the late Maywood and Lydia Charles Young. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Helen McCoy Young and his daughter, Erma Dean Young. He is survived by his sisters, Goldie Young Stepp-Kimper of Phoenix, Arizona and Alma Young-McCoy of Inez, Kentucky; son, Troy and Bette Young, and grand children, Curtis Matthew Young and Lisa Marie Young (Ryan) Smith.

He was a 55 year resident of Obetz, Ohio. He was a retiree of Columbus Coated Fabrics. A former member of the Order of the Odd Fellows, and the Masonic Fraternity of Groveport, Ohio.

Funeral services will be 11am Friday, July 11, 2014 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Davis Family Cemetery at Middle Fork.      James Larry Cantrell, age 65 of West Van Lear, passed away Thursday July3, 2014 at his home. He was born August 14, 1948 in Johnson County to the late Walter Cantrell and Cova Jones Cantrell. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Walter Cantrell Jr, Amos Elmo Cantrell and one sister, Mary Lou Cantrell. He was survived by one son, James Walter Cantrell of Van Lear; one daughter, Lisa Pruitt of Corbin, KY; four sisters, Jewell Lee  of Dayton, Ohio, Fran Collinsworth of Enon, Ohio, Betty Letuli of West Chester, Ohio, Freida Bolin of Lakeview, Ohio; one grandchild and one step grandchild also survive.

     Funeral services will be held Sunday July 6, 2014 at 1PM in the chapel of the Phelps and Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Cantrell Family Cemetery at West Van Lear.      Eulah Blair, age 97 of East Point, passed away Thursday July 3, 2014 at Mountain Manor Nursing Home of Paintsville. Born October 22, 1916 in Johnson County, Eulah was the daughter of the late Ross Hannah and Virgie Rivers Hannah. Eulah was born 6th. Of 11 children, 3 brothers and 7 sisters. She is survived by one son, Roger Dean Blair of Hager Hill; two daughters, Thelma (Thomas) Murray of East Point, Jearlean Donley of Paintsville; one sister, Eunice Snips of Troy, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Mike (Amy) Donley of Peoria, IL, Greg (Tammy) Donley of Paintsville, KY, Karen (David) Lewis of Hager Hill, KY, Kenneth (Madonna) Murray of Langley, KY, Joe (Lisa) Hopper of Newport Ritchie, FL, Doug (Paula) Hoppper of Sarrasota, FL, Vanessa (Jimmy) Dials of East Point and Greg (Lisa) Hopper of East Point. Eulah was also blessed with twelve great grandchildren, Jared Murray, Tori Fannin, Michael Murray, Corey Donley, Kristi Hopper, Jeremy Hopper, Brenton Dials, Jammie Dials Rice, Olivia Hopper, Dalton Hopper, Jon Lewis and soon to be Lilly. Six great great grandchildren, Lucy Fannin, Jocelyn Dials, Julianne Dials, Mackenzie Blair Rice, Tyler Lewis and Abby Lewis. Eulah took great pride in her family, from the oldest to the youngest.

     Eulah was a devout Christian, a member of Whitaker Freewill Baptist Church of East Point. When age played a part in her inability to attend services, she worshipped in her way – by listening to church services on TV or radio and reading her Bible daily from beginning to end many times. Throughout her many years, Eulah was a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. Eulah will be missed by all here on Earth, but welcomed by the Father and loved ones gone on before.

     Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 6, 2014 at 3PM in the chapel of the Phelps and Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Highland Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsville.    David Jude, age 77 of Oil Springs passed away Wednesday July 2, 2014 at King's Daughter's Medical Center in Ashland. Born March 29, 1937 in Martin County to the late Jack Jude and Pearl Blackburn Jude. He is survived by two daughters, Sandy Smith of Columbus, Ohio, Sherri Smith of Cardington, Ohio; six brothers, Rush Jude, Henderson Jude, Will Jude, T.D. Jude, Jobe Jude, Hershell Jude; three sisters, Thelma Parson, Judy Jude, Elva Jude and six grandchildren also survive.

   A celebration of life will be held at 1PM Saturday July 5, 2014 in the chapel of the Phelps and Son Funeral Home of Paintsville.      Russell Spence, age 80 of Williamsport, formerly of Tomahawk, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at his home. Born September 24, 1933 in Martin County, he was the son of the late Sonny and Martha Mollett Spence. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Russell is survived by a ½ brother, Kenny Spence of Sitka; and his care taker, Barbara Butcher of Williamsport, KY.

     May Smith, age 89 of Inez, passed away Monday, June 30, 2014 at the Martin County Health Care Facility in Inez. Born November 29, 1924 in Martin County, she was the daughter of the late Wallace and Celia Horn Webb. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Smith; two brothers, Andrew and Ray Webb; and one sister, Dixie Harmon. May is survived by two brothers, Noah Webb and his wife, Pauline of Lovely, KY and Jim Webb and his wife, Violet of Paintsville, KY; two sisters, Florence Bowen of Raleigh, NC and Lula B. Gardner and her husband, Herb of Lebanon, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Willie Bartrum.

     Funeral services will be 11am Thursday, July 3, 2014 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Warfield Cemetery. Greg Crum will officiate.
