Charles Kestner, age 58 of Wittensville, passed away Monday, March 31, 2014 at his home. Born May 1, 1955 in Johnson County to the late Alvis and Ruth Ray Kestner. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one sister, Debbie Evans. He is survived by his wife, Donna Vanhoose Kestner; one son, Charles (C.J.) Kestner Jr. of Paintsville; one daughter, Nikki Vaughn and her husband Chris of Paintsville; one sister, Sharon Hall of Hager Hill.

Danny William Pugh, age 76 of Paintsville, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2014 at his home. Born February 28, 1938 in Paintsville, he was the son of the late Daniel William Pugh and Ester Marie Travis Pugh. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara Castle Pugh; three sons, David W. Pugh and his wife Jennifer of Paintsville, Douglas W. Pugh and his wife Barbara also of Paintsville, and Darrell W. Pugh of Pikeville; two sisters, Charlene Williams of Flat Gap and Judy Blake of Fresno, California; and six grandchildren, Daniel, Wes, Daric, Seth, Meg, and Dylan Pugh.
Danny was retired owner and operator of Castle's Jewelry.
Funeral services will be 11am Tuesday, April 1, 2014 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville. John Hatton will officiate. Bethel Bowling, age 88 of Paintsville, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Mountain Manor of Paintsville. She was born November 20, 1925 in Auxier, KY to the late Frank Booth and Martha Whitaker. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Otis Bowling. She is survived by three sons, William Bowling, Terry Lee Bowling both of Wabash, IN, Clayton Bowling of Marion, IN; seven daughters, Brenda Blankenship, Alice Hewlett, Jackie Dollarhide all of Van Lear, Bertha Henry of Florida, Lucille Webb, Ida Ann Sparks both of Wabash, IN, Evelyn Hazelett of Hager Hill; one brother, Ellis Booth of Elk Hart, IN; three sisters, Mary Webb of Wabash, IN, Ida Mae Thomas, Florence Stiltner both of Columbus, OH; twenty-one grandchildren and several great grandchildren also survive.

Jesse Anthony (Tony) Kerr, age 66 of Inez, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at his home. Born December 6, 1947 in Indianapolis, IN to the late Jesse James Kerr and Katherine Cline Kerr Cline. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one brother, James (Jimmy) Bruce Kerr and his stepfather, Don Cline. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Ann Kerr; two daughters, Toni Kerr-McCoy of Inez and Dana McCall of Wilmington, OH; one stepson, Randall Scott Ashley of Louisville, KY; four grandchildren, Marissa Lynn McCall, Emily Laine McCall, Deana Jade Osborne, Luke Ashley; one nephew, Jimmy Don Kerr; one niece, Tiffany Kerr Broaddus; one great nephew; two great nieces; one sister-in-law, Brenda Kay Kerr; three beloved dogs, Zoey, Lady, and Fiesty.

Billy Booth, age 59 of Paintsville, passed away Wednesday morning at Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, KY. Born January 3, 1955 in Mingo County, West Virginia to Rachael Chaffins Booth and the late Luther Booth. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Alma Booth and one daughter, Pauletta Louise Whitt. He is survived by his mother, Rachael Booth; two sons, Trevor Aaron Booth of Paintsville, Billy Shawn Booth of Huntington, WV; one daughter, Jamie Renae Tackett of Paintsville; one brother, Michael Booth of Auxier; two sisters, Linda Sue Smith of Inez, Francis Mollette of Warfield and six grandchildren also survive.

Malcolm Blackburn, age 67 of Louisa, formerly of Martin County, passed away Monday, March 24, 2014 at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington. Born September 13, 1946 in Martin County, he was the son of the late Foch and Dixie (McGinnis) Blackburn. Malcolm is survived by two daughters, Sonja and Stephanie Blackburn both of Inez; one brother, J.D. (Karen) Blackburn of Lexington, KY; three sisters, Lucy Runion of Louisa, KY and Egie (Jimmy) Blackburn also of Louisa, and Vernon (Mark) Dahle of Colorado.

Dorothy Jane Sammons, age 84 of Inez, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014 at her home. Born January 31, 1930 in Martin County, she was the daughter of the late John C. Testerman and Wilda Crum Testerman. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. Sammons; three brothers, James, Clyde, and Curtis Testerman; one sister, Lillie Belle Horn; and a great grandson, Jacob Runyon. She is survived by three sons, Thomas Sammons, Jr of Inez, John Oliver (Rosann) Sammons of Winchester, KY, and Lowell (Pamela) Sammons of Inez; two daughters, Linda (Dan) Harris of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Patricia (Brian) Webb of Lovely; two brothers, John C. Testerman, Jr of Inez and Raymond Testerman of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Delcie Fitch of Inez; two sisters in law, Jean Testerman of Prestonsburg and Loretta Testerman of Inez; nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild also survives.
Dorothy was a member of the Big Elk Freewill Baptist Church since 1951.

Jay Newsome, age 89 of Debord, Kentucky passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014 at his home on Newsome Road. Born August 30, 1924 in Martin County Kentucky, he was the son of the alte Brose and Liza Ward Newsome. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Alice Delong Newsome; two children, George Newsome and Charlene Zody; seven grandchildren, Pauline Newsome, Ashley Hinkle, Leighann Barnes, James Nile Newsome, Travis Carter, Sherman Jay Newsome, and Florence Porter; five brothers, , Hank, Jim, Marvin, Hobert, and Brose Jr; three sisters, Anniette, Louise, and Grettle.
Jay is survived by his loving children, Tackett Newsome, Roger Dale Newsome, Bernita Gail Newsome, Rosalene Rose, Shirley Jay Newsome, James Ronnie Newsome, Robert Newsome, Daisy Hinkle, Minzie Stanley, Michale Newsome, Albert Newsome, Betsy Blackburn, Brenda Horn, Barbara Stump, Glenda Fay Jones, and Glen Newsome; one brother, Sylvester Newsome; four sisters, Shelby Jean, Olive, Mary, and Kathlene; a numerous host of grandchildren and great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren, too amny to mention by name, but all dearly loved their papaw Jay; and a very special friend, Sarah Fannin.
Jay was a veteran of the United States Naval Service from 1945 and was enlisted for two years. A Military Service will be conducted in Jay's memory immediately following the funeral.

Born December 15, 1945 in Xenia, OH, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Eliza Kozee Matthew. She is survived by her husband , Charles Ray May; one son, James Anthony May of Van Lear; two daughters, Rebecca J. Goble of Paintsville, Ardena May of Paintsville; one brother, James Matthew of Lexington; two sisters, Libby Baldwin and Lessie Cooley, both of Paintsville; two grandchildren, Emily Goble and Caleb Goble; and one great grandchild, Andrew Jaydon Preston.

Goldie Crabtree, age 87 of Nolan, West Virginia passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Born June 8, 1926 in Mingo County, she was daughter of the late Bob and Emma Boyd Marcum. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Virgil Crabtree; three children, four grandchildren, two brothers, two sisters, two sons-in-law, and two daughters-in-law. She is survived by two sons, Eddie (Alicia) Crabtree of Baisdentown, WV and Charles Ray Crabtree of Nolan, WV; four daughters, Ora Grizzle of Nolan, WV, Mary Newsome of Lenore, WV, Sharon (Jim Ed) Muncy of Kermit, WV, and Allison (Chuck) Wadell of Portsmouth, Ohio; nineteen grandchildren, thirty one great grandchildren, and thirteen great great grandchildren also survive.

Emma Joyce Music, age 71 of Oil Springs, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center. Born January 30, 1943 in Floyd County to the late Rev. James A. and Mildred Wells Sturgill. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by one daughter, Sheila Music. She is survived by her husband, Sam H. Music; two sons, James Norman Music of Oil Springs and Milford Eugene Music of Michigan; three daughters, Tammy Music Mann, Marlena Joyce Music Blazer, and Tonja Kay Blevins all of Oil Springs; one brother, Sheldon Eugene Sturgill of Louisville; two sisters, Marlene Jarvis of Van Lear and Tharon Kershner of Michigan. 26 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren also survive.

Edgar Crisp, age 70 of Tomahawk, peacefully passed away on March 13, 2014. Born December 23, 1943, in Paintsville, KY, the son of the late Marion and Mary Jane Crisp. Edgar was a Military Policeman in the Army in Germany during the Vietnam War. While he was a retired coal miner from Pontiki Coal Company, he was always a father first to his four children. Edgar loved fishing, gardening and animals. He loved to tell stories to visitors and always welcomed a chance to help a neighbor.
In addition to his parents, Edgar is preceded in death by his sister, Virginia (Blair) Pankovich. Edgar is survived by one brother, Gordon Crisp and his wife, Ella of Fallsburg, KY; one son, Edward Crisp of Georgetown, KY; three daughters, Letitia Damron of Morehead, KY, Lesly Crisp of Danville, KY and Ginell (Rick) Crum of Tomahawk, KY. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and close friends.

Pauline Sammons Fraley, 84, of Halls Branch of Tomahawk, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at her residence. She was born April 29, 1929 in Floyd County to the late Brown and Dora Gillespie Samons of Weeksbury. She was a homemaker, a substitute cook for Tomahawk School, and worked as a clerk for the food stamp department under CAP's Senior Program. She was a Christian and attended Inez First Baptist Church.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Fraley; grandsons, Mac Lenny McCoart and Scott Curtis Horn; brother, David Sammons; sister, Ruby Bayliss; and son in law, Mitchell Horn.
Her survivors include two sons, Robert (Brenda) Fraley of Tomahawk and Dane (Dawn) Fraley of Tomahawk; three daughters, Linda (McArthur) McCoart of Tomahawk, Patricia Horn (Rush Jude) of Tomahawk, and Judy (Tim) Logan of Catlettsburg; three brothers, Douglas (Nadine) Samons of Seneca, Sc, George (Karon) Samons, and Jospeh Samons of Wabash, Indiana; four sisters, Opal Mollette of Tomahawk, Leona (Adrian) Campbell of Wabash, IN, Mary Ann (Carl) Adkins of Savannah, TN, and Carolyn Sanders of Denver, CO; grandchildren, Mitzi (Dean) Harless, Larry (Jennifer) Horn, Roberta Eller, Mari Lou Fraley, Cameron (Melissa) Logan, Lee Logan, Toby Fraley, Lexi Newsome, Holly McDaniel, Michael McDaniel, Ellen Hensley, and Autumn Hensley; great grandchildren, Marissa, Jacob, Turner, Lyndon, Katie, Andrew, Kynlee, Lexi, Brody, Justin and Lucas. Also surviving are two special nieces, Claudean Williamson and Deborah Ramey.
God sent Pauline a special group of people these last four months to help participate in her physical and spiritual care. They quickly became part of the family and Pauline loved them dearly. These Appalachian Hospice workers were: Roger, Gwen, Michelle, Jamie, Kayla, Chelsea, and Gabriel. Also Brother Sam Schmidt visited on a regular basis letting Pauline Know the church was continuously praying for her.

Willis Moore, age 68 of Pilgrim, went home to be with the Lord on March 8, 2014. Born February 7, 1946 in Logan County, WV to Verlia Adkins Moore and the late Clay Moore. Along with his father he is preceded in death by one son, Brian Moore and one sister, Francis Harmon. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of nearly fifty years, Betty Jo (Helen) Jude Moore of Pilgrim; one daughter, Sharon (Roger) Newsome of Pilgrim; two brothers, Eugene (Sue) Moore, Dennis Moore both of Pilgrim; two sisters, Brenda (Bill) Davis of Inez, Drema (Billy) Meade of Pilgrim; six grandchildren, Christina Moore (Randall ) Frazier of Inez, Aimee Testerman, Justin Newsome, Kristen Newsome and Brianna Marcum all of Pilgrim, Brittany Moore of Blackberry and one great great granddaughter, Kayleigh Osendott also survive. Willis was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting with his dogs. He was a member of the Wolf Creek United Baptist Church.

Wesley Hodge, Sr. age 89 of Waverly, Ohio formerly of Kermit, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014 in Waverly. Born January 27, 1925 in Mingo County, he was the son of the late Liss and Betty Muncy Hodge. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mary {Baisden} Hodge; four sons, Charles Fred Baisden Jr, Billie Ray Baisden, William (Dude) Hodge, and John Wesley Hodge; one daughter, Janice Fay Hodge; four brothers, Joe, Arthur, Jess, and Ed Hodge; five sisters, Della, Stella, Annie, Josie, and Marie. Wesley is survived by sons, Wesley Hodge, Jr and his wife Kimberly of Waverly, and Johnnie Edward Baisden and his wife, Della of Cleveland, Ohio, Ralph (Joyce) Hodge of Piketon, Ohio and James Hodge of Columbus, and David Ray Hodge of Colorado; daughter in law, Avanell Hodge of Kermit, WV; two brothers, Jake and Cecil Hodge both of Kermit; many grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and many great great grandchildren.
He was a WWII Veteran and retired from General Motors, Chevrolet Division in Cleveland, Ohio.

Milton Sweeney, age 52 of Inez passed away at his home Monday evening. Born October 15, 1962 in Martin County to Opal Chaffin Sweeney and the late Bennie Sweeney. He is also preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Sweeney. He is survived by his companion, Donna Johnson of Inez; one son, Milton D. Sweeney; one daughter, Samantha Sweeney; three brothers, Covey Sweeney, Matthew Sweeney, James Sweeney; one sister, Rebecca Sweeney and several grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held Friday March 7, at the Vineyard United Baptist Church at 1PM with burial to follow in the Johnson Family Cemetery at Inez. Doc Maynard will officiate. Zola E. Maynard was born on June 11, 1922 and succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease March 2, 2014. She was the owner and operator of Charm Beauty Shop for sixty-three years. Along with her husband, she owned and helped operate Eden Theater, The Sweet Shop, The Main, and People’s Market.
Zola was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-one years, Joseph (Joey) Maynard, parents Effie Horn Endicott and Ransom Endicott, brothers: Lawrence, Marion, Floyd, Clyde (Sonny), and Ray. Sisters: Elsie, Agnus, and Mae. Two sisters, Estill Williams and Ellen Barber (Richard), survive her. She is also survived by her two children: Larry D. Maynard, LTC Retired (Ann), Lana Jo Hinkle (Jim) four grand children: Joseph S. Hinkle (Jennifer), Captain Timothy Maynard, Staff Sergeant Alexander Maynard, Captain Victoria Maynard and one great grand daughter Katherine E. Hinkle.
The viewing will be held Thursday at Phelps and Son Funeral Home, Inez, KY from 6-9 PM and the funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, March 7, 2014 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Orville Stepp; three sons, Aaron Lee (Melissa) Stepp of Ivel, KY, Dammian Lee (Dara) Stepp of Flatwoods, KY and Nate (Crystal) Green of Pikeville, KY; three brothers, Tim (Gail) McCoy of Van Lear, KY, Kenney (Debbie) McCoy of Charley, KY and Bob L. McCoy of Beauty, KY; four sisters, Estella and Robert (Bob) Horn of Inez, Lola (Terry) Mills of Tomahawk, Cathy (Jim) Presley of Milo, and Virgie McCoy of Beauty, KY; and 8 grandchildren, Matilyn, Raegan, Lauren, Kadence, Briar, Ian, Candice, and Ariel.
She was a retired school teacher and guidance counselor. Her nephews will serve as pallbearers.
