      Clyde Lackey, age 85, of Laurel Creek, W.V., passed away Friday, January 30, 2015 at his residence. Born December 2, 1929 in Kirk, W.V., he was the son of the late William and Betty Sartin Lackey. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one daughter, Beulah Clark; four sisters, Florence May, Lilly May White, Ethel Mullins, and Edith Faye White; and one brother, Bill Lackey. Left to cherish his memories are wife, Sarah Lackey; three sons, Thurman (Lana) Lackey of East Fork of Twelve Pole, Richard (Brenda) Lackey and Clyde Jr. (Anita) Lackey of Laurel Creek; seven grandchildren, Ruby Jo Hundley, Vonna Vance, Jim Cole Clark, Brandon, Brad, and Clyde A. Lackey and Whitney Preece; ten great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond Lackey of Laurel Creek and Lonnie Lackey of Elk Creek; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family friends.

 

     He was a timber cutter and loved to dig herbs, hunt and fish, and was a member of the Freedom United Baptist Church at Laurel Creek.

 

     Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the Freedom United Baptist Church, Laurel Creek with Brothers Eddie Hatfield and Jamie Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in the Lackey Cemetery at Marrowbone, W.V. Friends may call after 3:00 pm Monday at the Freedom United Baptist Church and until time of services at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez, Ky.

     Monika Akers, age 69 of Boonscamp, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2015 at Cornerstone Hospital in Huntington, WV. Born March 21, 1945 in Gedern, Germany she was the daughter of the late George Fehn and Margarete Mutter Fehn.  She is survived by one son, Ronnie Horn; two daughters, Tammy Stumbo, and Elaine Diane Horn; six grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

     There will be no public visitation or funeral. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Paintsville.

      Thelma Howell Spence Jude, age 80 of Louisa, formerly of Tomahawk, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2015 in Louisa. Born January 4, 1935 in Martin County, she was the daughter of the late Lacy B. and Laura Maynard Howell. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband, Willie Spence and second husband, Jim Jude; one son, Sgt. William E. Spence, Jr; one grandson, Adrian Spence; seven sisters, Nadine Howell, Annie Jude, Alice Heartley, Mavis Streeter, Gracy Stacy, Ethel Jude, and Rodean Mollett; four brothers, Ed and Edward Howell, Loydean Howell, and Lacy Jr Howell. She is survived by one daughter, Anita (and John) Brown of Tomahawk; one grand daughter, Patty (and James) Long of Tomahawk; one grand son, Michael Spence of Perry, Georgia; two sisters, Elma Race of Circleville, Ohio and Christine (and Bob) Buskirk of Louisa; one very special friends she loved like a daughter, her caregiver, Ladonna Hall; three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

     Thelma was a lifetime member at Davisport Freewill Baptist Church at Tomahawk.

     Funeral services will be 1pm Saturday, January 31, 2015 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Spence-Howell Cemetery at Rockhouse. Luther Fletcher and Willie Goble will officiate. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 6-10pm Friday and until the time of service on Saturday.      Beulah Mae (Vires) Wells, age 80 of Wabash, Indiana formerly of Van Lear, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2015 in Wabash, Indiana. Born December 5, 1934 in Van Lear, Kentucky she was the daughter of the late John and Grace Keel Vires. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by one son, Phillip Wade Wells; two brothers, Raymond and Russell Vires; She is survived by one son, Rodney (Joan) Wells of Wabash; two brothers, Bud and Johnny Vires; six sisters, Geraldine Webb, Betty Collins, Rita Winters, Sue Clifton, Carol Phelps, Jean Booth; three grandchildren, Christopher Wells, Melinda Wells Bontrager, Kimberly Wells Bucher; and six great grandchildren, Alexis, Avery, Chandler, Wyatt, Haylee, and Cheyanne.

     Funeral services will be held at 1pm Friday, January 30, 2015 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Keel Cemetery at Van Lear. Joe Hill will officiate.  James Henry Moore age 67 of Inez passed away Sunday, January 25, 2015 at J.J. Jordan Health Care Facility in Louisa. Born August 19, 1946 in Martin County, he was the son of the late Lora Moore Jude. In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Jean Hallam and Mary Ellen Jude. He is survived by two brothers, Danny (and Wanda) Jude of Beauty and Arthur (Judy) Jude of Kermit, WV; and one sister, Anna (and Charles) Dye of Inez.

      Funeral services will be 11am Thursday, January 29, 2015 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Moore Cemetery at Dye Bottom. Buddy Stacy will officiate.      Marietta Fern Bowling, age 65 of Van Lear, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center. Born May 18, 1949 in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Ben and Darlene Howard. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by one brother, Rocky Wells. She is survived by her husband, Gary (Pete) Bowling; two sons, Terry Neal (and Darlene) Bowling of Van Lear and Jimmy Bowling also of Van Lear; one brother, Clifford Booth of Continental, Ohio; two grandchildren, Matt (and Laken) Bowling and Emily Simpson; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

     Funeral services will be 2pm Wednesday, January 28, 2015 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.        James M. (Jimmy) Goble, age 87 of  Martin County, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the Martin County Health Care Facility.  Born March 22, 1927 in Johnson County, he was the son of the late John and Lydia Bowens Goble. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Darlene Harless Goble; three brothers, Frank Gene, Jessie Hearld and Hillard Goble; and one great great grandchild. He is survived by two sons; James David Goble of Delbarton, Wv. and Timothy J. (Carolyn) Goble of East Point, Ky; two daughters, Rachel Carol Dupree of Minot, North Dakota and  Cora Sue  (George) McGinnis of Tomahawk, Ky; 15 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

     Funeral services will be 11am Wednesday, January 28, 2015 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Goble Cemetery of Davella. Joe Hill will officiate.      Phyllis Mills, age 96 of Inez, Kentucky passed away Friday, January 23, 2015 at her residence. Born December ,10, 1918 in Martin County, Kentucky she was the daughter of the late William Sherman and Virgie Alley Maynard. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by husband Earl Mills, one daughter Delilah Priest, one brother Hobert Maynard; three sisters, Ola Marcum, Estella Moore and Aileen Whitt;one grandaughter, Judy Priest and one son-in-law Bob Carter. She is survived by one son Edward Lee Mills of Inez, Ky., two daughters, Leona Carter of Reynoldsburg, Oh. and Earlena (Ronnie) Duncan of Inez, Ky., one son-in-law A.G. Priest of Canal Winchester, Oh., one sister; Elsie Ellis of Spencer W.V., seven grandchildren; Jennie Lundgren, Jeff (Lori) Priest, Debbie (Don) Skinner, Brandon (Marlena) Lafferty, Brad (Olivia) Lafferty, Brad (Melissa) Duncan and Krissy (Eric) Staton, fifteen great grandchildren; Jana (Aaron) Pedowitz, Jessica Lundgren, Alec, Ben and Jack Priest, Devin, Drew and Dani Skinner, Hope and Will Lafferty, Addison, Avery and Ryder Duncan and Chloe and Maggie Staton, two great great grandchildren; Gillian Lundgren and Elijah Pedowitz, several special nieces and nephews and special caregivers; Amy Patrick, Janetta Maynard, Brenda Hannah, Sharon Fletcher and Marsha Mills.

     She was a homemaker and a long time member of the Turkey Creek Church of the Nazarene.

     Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am Monday, January 26, 2015 at the Turkey Creek Church of the Nazarene with burial to follow in the Mills, Horn, Crum Cemetery,Inez. Rev.      Curtis (Bub) Spence, age 87 of Flat Gap, KY went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center in Paintsville. Born September 28, 1927 in Martin County, he was the son of the late Willie and Daisy Bowen Spence. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Earnestine Wells Spence; two infant twin daughters, Brenda and Linda Spence; two brothers, George and Howard Spence; two sisters, Ruby Mollett and Dorothy Setser. He is survived by his wife Geraldine Spence; six sons, Vonlee (Linda) Wells of Pikeville, KY, Dallas (Judy) Spence of Inez, KY, Danny (Kim) Spence of Ulysses, KY, Bobby (Donna) Spence of Hager Hill, KY, Curtis Jr. (Debbie) Spence of Meally, KY, Gary (Michelle) Spence of Flat Gap, KY; three daughters, Carol (Jr) Booth of Inez, KY, Diane Spence Whitt of Lexington, KY, and Nola (Todd) Erickson of Willmer, MN; twenty-five grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren; one brother, Luther (Maudie) Spence of Tomahawk, KY; one sister, Trixie Meek of Williamsport, KY; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

      Funeral services will be held 11am Saturday, January 24, 2015 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Family Cemetery at Flat Gap.      Donna Wilson, age 60 of Lovely, Kentucky passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Tug Valley ARH in South Williamson. Born January 9, 1955 in Martin County, she was the daughter of the late Claude Ivan Wilson and Opal Moore Wilson.

     Susan F. Mollett, age 63, of Big Elk, Ky. passed away January, 15, 2015 at her residence. Born February 6, 1951 in Martin County, Ky. she was the daughter of the late Jasper Stepp and Gladys Fitch Stepp of Inez, Ky. In addition to her father she was preceded in death by one brother, James Henry Stepp. She is survived by her husband, James Ray Mollett of Big Elk; one son, James R. “Blue” (and Marlena) Mollett of Big Elk, Ky; one daughter, Angela (and Tommy) Toler of Big Elk, Ky; two brothers, Jasper (and Kathy) Stepp, Jr of Tomahawk, Ky., and Larry Stepp of Big Elk, Ky; four sisters, Irene Stepp Hensley, Lena Stepp (and Gary) Mitchell, Dicy Stepp and Judy (and Gerald) Stepp Clark all of Big Elk, Ky; seven grandchildren, Brandon, Cierra, Matthew, Kristin, Angel, Ryan, and Aaryn and one great-granddaughter Braelyn.

      Dianna Elaine Evans Gilman, age 63 of Lenore, West Virginia went to be with the Lord Thursday, January 15, 2015 at her home. Born March 25, 1951 in Williamson, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Asbury Evans and Vicy (Smith) Evans. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Robert Evans; and one sister, Linda (Evans) Gilman. She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Sidney Gilman; two sons, Randy (and Crystal) Gilman of East Kermit, West Virginia and Sidney Junior (and Sharon) Gilman of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky; two brothers, Danny Evans of Parkersburg, West Virginia and Sidney Lee Evans also of West Virginia; two sisters, Debbie Maeks of Parkersburg, West Virginia and Janie Hall of Delbarton, West Virginia; five grandchildren, Katherine, Jacob, Victoria, Destiney, and Cody; and two step grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Hillary also survive.

     Ellis Hill Sr., age 75, of Matewan, W.V., formerly of Leander, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, January 10, 2015 at his residence. Born July 19, 1939 in Morgan Co. Kentucky, he was the son of the late Hobert Hill and Beulah Williams . In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Hill. He is survived by one son, Ellis (Chelsea) Hill, Jr. of Matewan, West Virginia; one brother, Willis Hill of Paintsville, Kentucky; one sister, Delilah Farmer of Beckley, West Virginia, and one grandson, Curtis Hill of Banner, Kentucky.

     Nora Louella Amburgy, age 83 of Van Lear, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Mountain Manor in Paintsville. Born November 12, 1931 in Johnson County, KY to the late George Charles and Blanche Stafford Charles. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Amburgy; one brother, Ray Owens; three sisters, Wanda Rowland, Billie Jean Charles, and Georgie Burns. She is survived by three daughters, Darlene Duff of Warsaw, IN, Ruby Prater of Prestonsburg, KY, Freda Lewis of Van Lear, KY; two sisters, Gay Damron of Columbia City, IN, Susie Charles of Harold, KY; twelve grandchildren; thirty-four great grandchildren, and twelve great-great grandchildren.

      Funeral services will be held 12pm Monday, January 12, 2015 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in Gethsemane Gardens at Prestonsburg, KY.      Roger (Dale) Mann, age 67 of Inez, passed away Monday, January 5, 2015 at his residence. Born March 29, 1947 in Williamson, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Chris Mann and Minerva Mullett Mann. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by four brothers, Eugene Mann, Ed Mann, Chris Mann, Jr, and Lloyd Mann; two sisters, Patsy Chaffin and Martha Dillon; and two grand sons, Bentley and Braxton Mann. He is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Kimberly Murphy Mann; four sons, George (and Lezlie) Mann of Ft. Gay, West Virginia, Ricky (and Ruthie) Mann, Michael and Elizabeth) Mann, and Dale (and Lafaye) Mann all of Big Elk; three daughters, Debbie (and Tommy) Fluty of Pilgrim, Melissa (and Brian) Jarrell of Eastern, KY and Nicole Mann of Big Elk; two brothers, Bill Mann of Lovely, and Bob Mann of Tennessee; two sisters, Joyce Francis of Pike County and Margarett Francis of Tennessee; sixteen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren also survive.

      Eugene (Gene) Phelps, age 83 of Lake City, Fl. Born July 15, 1931 in Johnson County, he was the son of the late Kent and Edna Nichols Phelps. In addition to his parents, Gene is preceded in death by 3 bros. Kent Jr., Tommy, and Paul; 3 s...isters, Clotine, Audrey, and Betty. Surviving wife Ruth Manis Phelps; 1 son, Danny Keith ( Debbie ) of Lake City, Fl. 1 brother, Bill R. Phelps of Hager Hill, Ky; 2 sisters, Pat Smith of Florence, Ky and Mary Spodnik of Westfield Center, Ohio. US Air Force 22 years Married 65 years. American Standard after Service.
      Graveside services were conducted at Jacksonville National Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Jacksonville, Florida.

          Charles (Bill) Williams, age 80 of East Point, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2015 at Highlands Regional Medical Center. Born October 9, 1934 in Johnson County, he was the son of the late Jesse and Zora Williams. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Patsy Williams; one daughter, Kimberly Williams; and one sister, Deloris Davis. He is survived by his wife, Lorna (Cline) Williams; one son, Michael (and Sherri) Williams of Cynthiana, KY; two step sons, Paul Fields of Georgetown, KY and Kevin Fields of Walton, KY; two sisters, Leora Dutton and Kate Melvin both of Paintsville; two grandchildren, Aaron and Devon Williams; four step grandchildren, Kyle Fields, Shay Fields, Lauren Dillon, and Arianna Osborne; and one step great grandchild, Keeley Dillon also survives.

    Bill was employed by Broughtons Milk Company and was also a Mason.

    Funeral services will be 11am Monday, January 5, 2015 at the First Church of God at Little Paint with burial to follow in the Johnson County Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsville. Pastor Jeff White will officiate. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 5-9pm Sunday and one hour prior to the service Monday at the Church.      Paul H. Maynard, age 62 of Beauty, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2015 at his residence. Born May 22, 1952 in Paintsville to the late Jessie H. Maynard and Frances Mollett Maynard. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one son, Paul H. Maynard Jr.; one stepson, Nathan G. Maynard; five brothers, Greg, Luke, Charles, Roger, and Timothy Maynard. He is survived by two daughters, Darlene Kitts of Inez, KY, Jessica Bustetter of Kenova, WV, one stepson, Dennis Lee Bowen Jr. of Louisa, KY, two stepdaughters, Elizabeth Fitch of Tomahawk, KY, Jessica Bowen of Louisa, KY; one brother, Larry Maynard of Inez; three sisters, Debbie Brown of Inez, KY, Kathy Pinson of Beauty, KY, Josie Jude of Columbus, OH; and thirteen grandchildren.
      Funeral services will be held 1pm Monday, January 5, 2015 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Tackett Cemetery at Fallsburg.
