     Elmer Dials, age 82 of Tomahawk, passed away Monday, November 28, 2016 at his residence. Born October 17, 1934 in Martin County, he was the son of the late Peter and Wilda Jane Pauley Dials. In addition to his parents, Elmer is preceded in death by four brothers: Ellis, Burgess, Jerome, and John Dials; five sisters: Oma Muncy, Nona Mills, Mary Ellen Moore, Hattie Mae Cassell, and Gladys Hale; one grand daughter, Chloe Madison; and a son in law, Gerald Thomas.

     He is survived by his wife, Jean Stepp Dials; one son, Paul and his wife, Lori Dials of Stamping Ground, KY; three daughters: Beverly and her husband Jerry Fugate of Wittensville, KY, Patricia and her husband, Terry Johnson of Columbia and Myra and her husband, David Brammer of Culloden, WV; one brother, Ace Dials of Kansas; two grandchildren: Nathaniel Paul Dials of Paintsville, KY and Ethan Douglas Dials of West Liberty, KY; several step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive.

 

     A Graveside Service will be held 1pm Thursday, December 1, 2016 at the Elmer and Jean Dials Cemetery at Tomahawk. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 6pm to 9pm Wednesday and from 9am to 12:30pm Thursday prior to the graveside service. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.

    Deborah Conley Howe was born in Paintsville, Kentucky on December 30, 1952. She passed away early Monday morning November 28, 2016, after a lengthy illness, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.

 

     Debbie was preceded in death by her father, Woodford Conley, her mother Audrey Preston Conley, and one sister, Sandra Lee Conley. She is survived by a nephew, Rudolpho Woodford Conley of 620 Talley Road, Lexington, Kentucky 40502, and many extended family members in Kentucky and surrounding states.

 

     Debbie graduated from Paintsville High School in Paintsville, Kentucky and Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia. She taught special education and visually impaired students for the Fayette County Kentucky School System. Debbie retired from the Fayette County Kentucky School System.

 

     She was the founder and operated the Howe Foundation, a charitable foundation that benefited many artist and craftsmen in and around Kentucky.

 

     Debbie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Paintsville, Ky. She also attended the Second Presbyterian Church,460 East Main Street, Lexington, KY 40507.

 

     Graveside services will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 11 AM, at the Highland Memorial Park Cemetery, 551 Kentucky Route 2275, Staffordsville, KY 41256.

 

     In lieu of flowers, contributions are asked to be made to the Second Presbysterian Church in Lexington.

 

     Arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps and Son Funeral Home, Hager Hill, KY.

     Patty Jean McKenzie, age 61 of Leander, KY, passed away Friday November 25, 2016 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center in Paintsville.

     Born April 23, 1955 in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Cuder Ramey and Belle Dale Ramey. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister, Linda Johnson. 

     She is survived by two step sons: Kenny McKenzie and Robert McKenzie both of Flat Gap; one step daughter: Carla Cantrell of Flat Gap; two brothers: Henry Ramey of Prestonsburg and Sam Ramey of Paintsville; and seven sisters: Donna Lemaster of Hager Hill, Joyce Webb of Sitka, Pauline Blair of Paintsville, Penny O'Brian of Winchester, Della Auxier of Hager Hill, Jenny Fraley of Hager Hill and Prissa Mullins of Oil Springs.

     Funeral services will be 1pm Tuesday November 29, 2016 at the Riceville Freewill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville. Willis Blair and Jason Auxier will officiate. Friends may visit the church after 5pm Sunday and all day Monday. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Paintsville.

    Gary Cain, age 64 of Inez, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Pikeville Medical Center. Born September 29, 1952 to Betty Roberts of Inez, and the late Willard Cain. In addition to his Father he is preceded in death by one sister; Deborah Cain and one brother, Randy Dwayne Cain.

     Surviving are three sons; Gary Michael Cain II of Frankfork, KY, Larry Daniel Jude of Prestonburg, KY., and Phillip Brian Cain of Somerset, KY., one brother; Larry Dean Cain of Inez, KY., and one granddaughter McKenna Taylor Cain.

     Funeral services will be 1:00pm Saturday, November 26, 2016 in the chapel of Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Cain Family Cemetery, Inez. Phillip Kirk will officiate.      Annice Music, age 79 of Boonscamp, passed away Monday, November 21, 2016 at Pikeville Medical Center. Born August 1, 1937 in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Lee Bernard Williams and Alta Mae Well Williams. She is survived by her husband, Dola Music; one son, Jason and his wife Amanda Music of Louisa; one grand daughter, Brookelyn Music; one brother, James Williams of Paintsville; one sister, Eula Mae McGinnis of Carter County; and one niece, Sherri Delong of Martin County.
     Funeral services will be 2pm Wednesday November 23, 2016 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville. B.      George Jude, age 83 of Martin County, passed away Friday November 18, 2016 at his home. Born April 15, 1933 in Martin County, he was the son of the late Charlie and Truly Scott Jude. In addition to his parents, George is preceded in death by one brother, Jeff Jude; and four sisters: Mary Mollett, Easter Jude, Laura Belle Blackburn and Nannie Stacy. He is survived by three sisters: Madgie Collins of Pilgrim, Ruby Fletcher of Debord and Victoria Carter of Lowmansville.

     Funeral services will be 1:00pm Wednesday November 23, 2016 at the Vineyard United Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Family Cemetery. Dave Bowen will officiate. Tonna Lee Dawson, age 71 of Van Lear, passed away Thursday, November 17, 2016 at her home. Born November 20, 1944 in Portland, Oregon to the late Haskell Collins and Elizabeth Elkins Collins. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond “Buddy” Dawson {Feb. 26, 1995}. She is survived by her son, Rodney Dawson and wife Regina of Paintsville; one brother, Ray Griffith and wife Nadine of Morehead. Four grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive.

     Funeral services will be held 1pm Sunday, November 20, 2016 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Honeycutt Cemetery at Van Lear. Larry Blair will officiate. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Saturday from 5-9pm and until time of services on Sunday.    Regina Faye Mills Evans, age 39 of Warfield, passed away Thursday November 17, 2016 at Three Rivers Medical Center. Born August 6, 1977 to the late Shirley Whitt Mills. In addition to her mother, she is preceded in death by her brother, Albert Mills, three sisters: Donna Jean Mills, Ovada Mills and Bessie Mills. She is survived by husband William Ray Evans of Warfield, KY, three sons, Shawn D. Mills of Warfield, KY; Curtis Farley of Lovely, KY; Damien Evans of Warfield, KY; one stepson Jamie Evans of Lovely, KY; one daughter, Desaray Evans of Warfield. KY; and one stepdaughter Beverly Evans of Boonscamp, KY; five brothers; Garland Ray (Margie) Mills of Pilgrim, KY , Paul Mills of Beauty, KY, Clyde Russell (Charlene) Mills of Columbus, Ohio, Luther Mills of Beauty, Charles Edward (Kathy) Mills of Kermit, WV.; four sisters; Mary Ann Whitt of Beauty, KY, Gwenda Vera Mills of Beauty, KY, Willa Dean (Johnny) Messer of Kermit, WV, Connie Lou Marcum of Wayne, WV., and four grandchildren.

   Funeral services will be 1 PM Sunday November 20, 2016 at the Tabernacle of Praise ,Turkey Creek, with burial to follow in the Mills Cemetery at Turkey. James Horn will officiate.      Alfred (Al) Deskins, age 86 of Thelma, passed away Wednesday November 16, 2016 at his home. Born October 2, 1930 in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Herbert Deskins, Sr and Grace Lee Honshell Deskins. In addition to his parents, Al is preceded in death by one daughter, Gegie Deskins; and one sister, JoAnn Carol Deskins Branham. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jo Meade Deskins; one brother, Herbert Deskins, Jr and his wife Kathy of Pikeville, KY; his grand daughter, Carla Van Horn of Lexington; four great grandchildren: Jacqueline Van Horn, Darrin Van Horn Jr, Blake Van Horn and Hayden Van Horn; brother in law, Eck Branham of Nicholasville, KY; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

    Al was a Navy Veteran in the Korean Conflict.

    Funeral services will be 1pm Friday November 18, 2016 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the J.F. Conley Cemetery at Staffordsville. Tobe Wheeler will officiate. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 12pm to 1pm Friday one hour prior to the service. Chapter 18 D.A.V. of Auxier will conduct Military Honors.       Betty Walters, age 88 of Williamsport, passed away Wednesday November 16, 2016 at her home. Born March 21, 1928 in Paintsville, KY, she was the daughter of the late William Jefferson Ward and Vinnie Ellen Fitchpatrick Ward. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, John Calvin Walters {March 29, 2001}; four brothers: Seldon Ward, John P. Ward, Jeff Sherman “Tag” Ward and Lowell Ward; and one sister, Shirley Preston Davis.

 

    She is survived by one son, John Calvin Walters II of Hammond, KY; daughters: Judy (and Dan) Huff of Hillsville, Virginia, Rebecca (and Jeffrey) Fountain of Columbus, Ohio, Deanna (and Bobby) Hobson of Williamsport, KY, Rhonda (and Robert) Blanton of Flat Gap, KY, Marcia (and John) Harmon of Stanton, KY; one sister, Alberta Lent of Mitchville, Maryland; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive.

 

    Funeral services will be 11am Saturday November 19, 2016 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Ward – Walters Cemetery at Williamsport.        Verlie Phelps Gibson, age 93 of Inez, passed away Saturday, November 12, 2016 at Logan Regional Medical Center, Logan WV. Born February 10, 1923 in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Walker and Virgie Music Ratliff. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband William Lon Phelps (Bill) and Claudis Gibson. Five sons: Doug Phelps, Dann Phelps, Tony Phelps and twins James Larry and Paul Gary Phelps, four sisters: Verna Fletcher, Yvonne Johnson, Jackie Hinkle and Valerie Branham and one brother: Jerry Ratliff. She is survived by three sons: Ron Phelps (Karen) of West Jefferson, Ohio, Lonnie Phelps (Wendy) of Blountville, Tennessee, Keith Phelps (Susan) of Atlanta Georgia, five daughters: Billie Dingess (Jay) of Lakeworth, FL, Pat Mills ( Eddie) and Johnna Stiles (Gary) both of Inez, Sheliah Elkins (Chuck) of Logan, WV, Sabrina Messer (Darrell) of Abingdon, VA and one sister: Viola Music of Paintsville, Ky., twenty one grandchildren, thirty three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

     A special thank you to Dr. William Mullen and staff for Mom's care through the years, along with the staff of Logan Medical Center, Logan, WV.

  Rella Amburgey, age 89 of Tomahawk, passed away Friday, November 11, 2016 at Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa. Born January 9, 1927 in Martin County, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Cora Howard. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Winfred Amburgey {August 19, 2016}; one son: David Preston; two daughters: Tina Maynard and Cora Jude; three brothers: James Albert Howard, Ben Howard, and Gilbert Howard; three sisters: Dot Bowens, Vaomie Burchfield, and Jen Butcher. She is survived by four sons: Bill Preston, Jackie (Paula) Preston, Johnny (Rhonda) Preston all of Tomahawk, Jimmy (Susie) Preston of Davella; two stepsons: Roger (Karen) Amburgey of Somerset, and Adrian (Josephine) Amburgey of Terre Haute, Indiana; three daughters: Maggie (Shelby) Moore of Pilgrim, Clistine (Richard Jr.) Maynard of Riceville, Gertie (Bobby) Sparks of Louisa; one stepdaughter: Susan (Jeffery) Lowden of Cave Junction, Oregon; two sisters: Sharon (Don) Davis of Tomahawk, and Emma Jane Preston of Inez. Many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren also survive.

     Funeral services will be held 1pm Monday, November 14, 2016 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Preston Family Cemetery at Tomahawk.      Thomas Albert Johnson, age 53 of Inez, passed away Monday November 7, 2016 at Pikeville Medical Center. Born February 22, 1963 in Lawrence County, he was the son of the late Marion Johnson and Fannie Bowens Johnson. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Curtis Lee Johnson; and one sister, Hester Johnson. He is survived by one brother, James Johnson of Lawrence County; and two sisters, Lois Johnson and Haley Johnson both of Inez.

   Eunice Faye Reed , age 53 of Louisa, KY left this world  Saturday , November 5, 2016 at her home. Born May 1, 1963 to the late Columbus Preece and Ova Muncy Scott of Columbus, Ohio. In addition to her father she is preceded in death by one son ; James Allen Preece , one half brother Columbus (Bug) Preece and one grandson Curtis Allen Whitt. She is survived by her husband Thomas Reed of Louisa, one son; Terrie Thomas of Inez, two daughters ; Thomasina (Titan) Kingery of Columbus, Ohio , Violet Rose Reed (Curtis Whitt) of Inez, Ky. One brother; Norman ( Katherine) Preece of Columbus, Ohio., four sisters; Peggy Sue Morris of Darbiedale,Ohio, Wanda Williams of Circleville, Ohio, Emalene (Don) Anderson of Columbus, Ohio and Connie (Claude) Lowe of Louisa, Ky. one greandson; Titan (Booger) Kingery of Columbus, Ohio. A host of Nephews and Neices, family and friends. Eunice was one of the most caring person who never met a stranger, she loved her family very much, she will be greatly missed by many.

  Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Wednesday November 9, 2016 at the New Friendship Church with burial to follow in the Reed Cemetery at Louisa. John Goble will be officiating.    Carl Slone, age 84 of Johnson County, formerly of Martin County passed away Friday, November 4, 2016 at Paul B. Hall Medical Center. Born January 7, 1932 in Martin County he was the son of the late Harrison and Lola Bratton Slone. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by one brother; Harrison Slone Jr., and three sisters; Shirley Jude, Mary Horn and Francis Sluss and one great grandchild; Charles Ryder Meadows.

    He is survived by his wife Dorothy Keel Slone, two sons; Randy (Thelma) Slone of Inez and Rick (Deresa) Slone of Banner, one brother; Robert Slone, four grandchildren; Dorothy Parks, Virginia Meadows, Randy Slone II and Phillip Slone and four great-grandchildren.

    Carl was a Veteran of The United States Army, a retired coal miner and a member of the Enterprise Baptist Church. He will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

    Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Monday, November 7, 2016 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Riverview Memorial Gardens at Louisa. Roger Hill will be officiatng. Friends may visit the funeral home from 5-9 pm Sunday. Arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.
