     Shyrlene Fairchild, age 55 of Staffordsville, Kentucky passed away Sunday July 30, 2017 at Paul B. Hall Medical Center in Paintsville. Born July 14, 1962 in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Sammie Wells and Willa Dean Honeycutt Wells. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by one daughter, Samantha Jo Fairchild and one brother, Rocky Wells.

     She is survived by her husband, Jim Fairchild; four sons: Justin Fairchild and Tamara Cole, Christopher Fairchild, Nathan Fairchild and Shawn Fairchild all of Staffordsville; one daughter: Christy Lynn Cochran of Ohio; three brothers: Virgil Wells of Paintsville, Bradley Wells of Van Lear and Troy Wells of Paintsville; five sisters: Cammy Holbrook of Paintsville, Dedra Johnson of Prestonsburg, Chris Ann Nelson of Prestonsburg, Kimberly Hall of Knott County and Stacy Wells of Paintsville; and two grandchildren also survive.

     Funeral services will be 11am Thursday August 3, 2017 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Dixon Cemetery at Staffordsville. Kenny Pelphrey and Terry Lykins will officiate. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 5pm to 9pm Tuesday, 9am to 9pm Wednesday and until the time of service on Thursday. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Paintsville.

     William “Buzz” Preston Pauley, 66 of Pilgrim, Kentucky passed away with friends and family by his side on July 28, 2017. He left this earth in the same way he lived with great perseverance and his usual humble grace. William was the son of Gertrude Harrison of Colorado and the late Clearance Pauley of West Virginia. William made a wonderful decision in 1972 and married the love of his life Joyce.
William is preceded in death by his daughter, Sheryl Bridgette Younce, brothe...r Dale Wilson and father Clarence Pauley.
     He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joyce Pauley, daughter Tonya and husband Chris Zack of Richmond, Kentucky, granddaughters Haley Younce and Lakin Younce of
Salyersville, Kentucky great granddaughters Madelynn and Macie McKenzie of Salyersville, Kentucky, sisters Lana and husband Bob Dimmit, Nina Morgan, and Regina Pauley, brothers, Deniel Wilson, Tommy Pauley, Ronnie Pauley, Shonny Pauley, Mitchel Pauley, and Lonnie Pauley along with countless family and friends.
    William worked many years in the mines in which he loved. He also loved racing cars of all forms but especially stock car racing and was fondly known as #21. His favorite moments were when his daughters held the checkered flag for the winners lap. He always had a passion for being outdoors and the hills of Eastern Kentucky. He arrived in these hills years ago and they became his home. In the words of James Still, “I shall not leave these prisoning hills…I cannot leave. I cannot go away. Being of these hills I cannot pass beyond.” He will always remain a part of these hills.
     Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 5, 2017 at the Pilgrim House of Prayer at 2:00 PM. Family and friends are encouraged to bring a ‘memory’ or photo of Buzz to
share with the family. Join our family in celebrating our precious Buzz! We remember, “Life is what you celebrate. All of it. Even its end” Joanne Harris.

      Harold Douglas Green, age 79 of Sitka, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2017 at his residence. Born June 12, 1938 in Johnson County, he was the son of the late Jimmy and Carmen Rice Green. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two brothers: Wendell Green and Roger Green; and one sister: Sandra Gayle Green.

     He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Simpson Green; two sons: Tim (Kathy) Green of Sitka, Mike (Rosemary) Green of Cynthiana; one daughter: Robin Shepherd of Sitka; one sister: Wilma Joy Burchett of Sitka; seven grandchildren: Bryce Shepherd, Lauren Shepherd, Travis Green, Jason Green, Jessica Green, Daniel Green, Ryne Green; one great grandchild: Natalie Rose Green. Harold was a proud veteran serving in the United States Army.

     Funeral services will be held 2:00pm Sunday, July 23, 2017 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Green Family Cemetery at Sitka. Roger Ross will officiate. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 5pm-8pm on Saturday. Funeral arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Paintsville.

     Linda A. Perry, age 69 of Harrisonburg, Virginia, formerly of Tomahawk, passed away Wednesday July 12, 2017 in Harrisonburg. Born March 3, 1948 in Stephenson, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Bertha Reeder Foley of Harrisonburg, Virginia and the late Arnold Foley. In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by two sons, Robert Mack Perry and Virgil Scott Perry; one brother, Paul Arnold Foley; and one sister, Zada Lafferty.

     She is survived by Leroy Perry, Jr of Tomahawk, Kentucky; her mother, Bertha Reeder Foley of Harrisonburg, Virginia; one son, Jimmy Ray Perry of Franklin, West Virginia; one brother, Roy Foley of Harrisonburg, Virginia; one sister, Betty Perry also of Harrisonburg, Virginia; and ten grandchildren also survive.

    Funeral services will be 2pm Sunday July 16, 2017 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Perry Cemetery at Rockhouse. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 5pm to 9pm Saturday and until the time of service on Sunday. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.

    Lora Preece, age 60 of Pilgrim, Kentucky passed away Friday, July 14, 2017 at the Community Hospice Center, Ashland. Born July 2, 1957 she was the daughter of Edna Lowe Dillon of Jennies Creek West Virginia. She is preceded in death by her husband, James L. Preece and one sister, Fannie Lynn Simpkins.

      In addition to her mother she is survived by four daughters: Marlene (and Devin) Preece of Cythiana, Kentucky, Misty (and Scott) Castle of Warfield, Kentucky, Jammie Pack of Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky and Wanda (and Tommy) Crawford of Ft. Gay, West Virginia; one brother, Johnny (and Lora) Simpkins of Beauty, Kentucky; special friends, Lou Howell; twelve grandchildren: T.J. Floyd, David Pinson, Tiffany Pinson, Tyler Osborne, Kaitlyn Risner, EmmaLee Preece, David Chapman, Easton Preece, Laikan Crawford, Abby Crawford, Jordan Castle and Brooklyn Castle; and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

      Funeral services will be 1pm Monday July 17, 2017 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Preece Cemetery, Pilgrim. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 6pm to 9pm Saturday and from 6pm to 9pm on Sunday. Buddy Stacy will officaite.      Dennis R. Lyons, age 69 of Paintsville, passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Born November 4, 1947 in Johnson County, he was the son of the late Bert Lyons and Margie Ward Lyons. In addition to his parents, Dennis is preceded in death by three brothers: James Lyons, Charlie Lyons and Roy Mitchell Lyons; and two brothers in law: Joe Buckley and Karl Bower.

     He is survived by his wife, Sharon Sturgill Lyons; two daughters, Amy Lyons and Marty Stevens of Winchester, Kentucky and Angie and David Litton of Meally, Kentucky; one brother, Lanny (and Mary) Lyons of River, Kentucky; two sisters, Alberta Buckley of Toledo, Ohio and and Anna Louise Bower of Indiana; two sisters in law, Peggy Lyons of Paintsville, Kentucky and Claudia Lyons of Staffordsville, Kentucky; two grandchidlren, Chase Andrew and Nathan Garrett; two step grandchildren, Autumn Stevens and Zachary Litton; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

     Funeral services will be 11am Friday July 14, 2017 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Ward Family Cemetery at River. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 1:00pm to 9:00pm Thursday and until the time of service on Friday. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Paintsville.

        Nancy Jane “Carter” White, age 75 of Inez, passed away Monday July 10, 2017 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center in Paintsville. Born to Shade and Juanita “Ward” Carter on July 30, 1941 in Martin County. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three sisters: Charity, Daisy, and Helen Carter; and an infant child, George Franklin White.

 

      She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Elden White; two sons, Wil (and Karen) White of Lafayette, Indiana and Elden David (and Brenda) White of Inez; one daughter, Mary White (and Eddy) of Inez; one sister, Mary Stafford of Tomahawk; one brother, David Carter of Inez; seven grandchildren: Kevin White, Donna White, Jessa White, Sarah White, Adora Williams, Annette Mackto and Matthew Smith; and nine great grandchildren of which the youngest is Liam Williams, who she never got to meet.

      She was a member of Big Elk United Baptist Church.

      Funeral services will be 11am Friday July 14, 2017 at the Big Elk United Baptist Church on Blacklog. Burial will follow in the White Family Cemetery, Inez. Friends may visit the church after 5pm Wednesday, and all day Thursday. Pastor Jim Maynard will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Phelps & Son Funeral Home to assist with funeral expenses. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.

     James A. Harmon, age 90 of Pilgrim, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2017 at his residence. Born February 16, 1927 in Martin County, he was the son of the late Alex Harmon and Sally Neice Harmon. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Reba Hale Harmon {August 9, 2008}; one son, Homer Harmon; five brothers: Ralph, Homer, Eddie, Freddie and Earl Harmon; and six sisters: Blanche Lengal, Agnes Hyde, Alice Harmon, Effie Keifer, Helen Trago and Beatrice Lewis.

 

    He is survived by three sons: David Harmon of Williamson, Donnie Harmon and Jack Harmon both of Pilgrim; three daughters: Patty Chisholm of Vista, California, Betty Taylor of Pilgrim and Rhonda Mounts of Warfield; three brothers: Mid Harmon, Ken Harmon and John Harmon all of Pilgrim; twenty grandchildren, thirty great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren also survive.

    Funeral services will be 11am Thursday July 13, 2017 at the Union United Baptist Church at the mouth of Emily Creek. Burial will follow in the Harmon Family Cemetery on Emily Creek. Terry Harmon will officiate. Friends may visit the church after 4pm Tuesday and after 12pm Wednesday. There will be a Military Service to follow at the church. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.

     Buddy Lee Horn, Sr., age 79 of Hazard, formerly of Inez, passed away Thursday, July 6, 2017 at his residence. Born May 17, 1938 in Martin County he was the son of the late Sanford Horn and Inez Keaton Horn. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by three brothers: Enos Harvey, Elzie Harvey, and Herman Horn; one sister: Anna Mae Hinkle. He is survived by one son: Buddy Horn, Jr. of Hazard; one daughter: Brenda (Bill) Carr of Hazard; two brothers: H.D. Horn of Louisa, Thurman Horn of Inez; two sisters: Shelby Salyer of Paintsville and Lura Mills of Boyd County; four grandchildren: Evan Cramer, Jaycob Carr, Courtney Gossman, and Breanna Horn.

     Funeral services will be held 2pm Wednesday, July 12, 2017 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Horn Family Cemetery at Inez. Preston Haddix will officiate. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 12pm-2pm Wednesday prior to the service. Arrangements under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.

     Kathy A. Russell, age 63 of Tomahawk , Ky., passed away Friday, July 7, 2017 at her residence. Born November 11, 1953 in Canton, Oh. She was the daughter of the late Johny David and Winifred Elizabeth Workman Thompson. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband Kellie Alan Russell, one brother; Tommy Eugene Thompson and one sister; Jackie Marie Gouge.

    She is survived by one daughter; Kathy Jo (Robert) Williamson of Tomahawk, Ky., two step sons; Kevin Alan (Missy) Russell and Jason Alan Russell.; one brother; Graydon Ben (Karen) Thompson of South Point, Oh., one sister; Susan K. (Melvin) Rice of Lavalette, Wv., three grandaughters; (special grandaughter) Amanda Leann Wells and Kristina and Abbygale Jude and close friends Paula and Andy Wells and Keith and Ann Horn.

    At the request of the family there will be no public services at this time.

      Ermal Staton, age 81 of Pilgrim, passed away Friday, July 7, 2017 at Mountain View Health Care in Elkhorn City. Born July 20, 1935 in Martin County, he was the son of the late David Staton and Dora Moore Staton. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by three sisters: Connie Staton, Elsie Staton, and Dottie Barch.  He is survived by his loving wife, Joann Jude Staton; one son: Arthur Staton (Sis) of Pilgrim; one daughter: Aldie Staton of Inez; one stepson: John Kelly Mayo of Louisa; four stepdaughters: Melissa Mayo of Georgetown, Dena Harmon (Homer) of Prestonsburg, Dottie Mayo of Pilgrim, Carolyn Hurley (Paul Jacobs) of Pikeville;  four brothers: Herman Staton, Jimmy Staton, David Staton all of Lovely, and Amos Staton (Easter) of Inez; three sisters: Mary Jenkins of Ohio, Larna Setser of Lovely, and Carol Daniels (Edgar) of Tomahawk. Several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren also survive.

     Funeral services will be held 12pm Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at the Martin County Freewill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Staton Family Cemetery at Lovely. Friends may visit at the church after 4pm Sunday, and all day Monday. Funeral arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.

    Minerva (Marcum) Kirk age 92, of Breeden W.V., entered into her eternal home on Saturday, July 1, 2017.

     Minerva was born March 26, 1925 to the late Lil Joe Marcum and Cozie (Ferguson) Marcum. Along with her parents she was preceeded in death by sisters; Mahala Marcum Vannetter, Nettie Marcum Kirk, Eloise Marcum Baldwin, Irene Marcum Chaffins and Madge Marcum Perry and one brother; Elzie Marcum.

    She is survived by her siblings; Sidney Marcum of Dingess, W.V., Conard Marcum of Baltimore, Oh., and Sandra Kay Fletcher of Nelsonville, Oh.

    She was a loving mother to seven surviving children: Jerry (Drema) Kirk of Ashville, Ohio, Eula (Dave) Murphy of Spartanburg, S.C., Carolyn (Tommie) Dempsey of Myrtle, W.V., Cozy (Ricky) Workman of Breeden, W.V., Johnny (Charlene) Kirk of Crum, W.V., Loretta (Freelin) Browning, Kiahsville, W.V., and Lisa (Donnie) Canterbury of Lenore, W.V.

      She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

      Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, July 6, 2017 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Vannetter Cemetery, Dunlow, W.V., Daniel Perry will be officiating . Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Friends can visit the funeral home from 6-9 pm Wednesday. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to the Dignity Hospice of Chapmanville, W.V. Arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home , Inez.

Ronnie Lee Ward, Sr., age 43 of Inez, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2017. Born May 18, 1974 in Marion, Ohio, he was the son of Judy Kay Parsons Ward of Inez and the late Kennith Larry Ward, Sr.. In addition to his mother, he is survived by one son: Ronnie Lee Ward, Jr. of Inez; one brother: Kennith Larry Ward, Jr. of Inez; and one sister: Kathy Bender of Marion, Ohio.

      Memorial services will be held from 11am-2pm on Friday, July 7, 2017 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home. Arrangements are by the Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez.
