      Everett “Buddy” Salyers, age 70, formerly of Johnson County, passed away Friday, July 26, 2019. Beloved husband of Lillian for 50 years. Dear father of Craig (Christina) and Kimberly. Loving brother of Kathie (Fiancé Scott Campbell) Hartt. Everett is loved and missed by his extended family and friends. He proudly served in the US Army during Vietnam and retired from General Motors as an electrician after 43 years. Visitation Tuesday, July 30 from 2-8pm and Wednesday 10am until time of service 10:30am at Bagnasco & Calcaterra Funeral Home, 13650 E. 15 Mile Rd., Sterling Heights. Interment at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.

     Benton Christopher (Chris) Deaton, age 48 of Coal Grove, Ohio formerly of Paintsville, passed away Saturday July 27, 2019 after a brief illness.

 

     Born November 4, 1970 in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of Marsha Rae Childers of Paintsville, Kentucky and the late Paul D. Deaton. In addition to his mother, Chris is survived by one son, Jonathan Tyler Deaton of Paintsville; one grand daughter, Elizabeth Tyler Deaton of Prestonsburg, Kentucky; step father, Michael Dip Stafford; two sisters, Raelynn Deaton Haynes and her husband Aaron of Austin, Texas and Marcy Deaton and her husband, Frank Butler of Lexington, Kentucky; and one brother, Michael Stafford II also of Lexington, Kentucky.

 

    Chris was a 1989 graduate of Johnson Central High School, where was two time All-State and 3 years All-Area in football. He was a 1994 graduate of Marshall University, where he was a member of the I-AA National Championship Team in 1992 and the runner-up teams in 1991 and 1993. Chris started 56 consecutive games for the Thundering Heard. He won the 1993 Jacobs Blocking Award as the top offensive lineman in the Southern Conference and was also named as a first team All-American in 1993. He was All-Southern Conference, second team, as a freshman and sophomore, then earned first team honors in his junior and senior seasons. He graduated from Marshall in 1994. In 2015, Chris was inducted into the Marshall University Hall of Fame.

 

     Funeral services will be 2:00pm Tuesday, July 30, 2019 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 5:00pm to 9:00pm Monday and anytime prior to the service on Tuesday. Seth Carter will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Marshall University Football Program or Lymphoma Foundation (www.lymphoma.org).  Arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home.

     Troy L. Proffitt, age 69 of Auxier, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2019 at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky.

 

     Born July 14, 1950 in Richlands, Virginia, he was the son of the late Herman Proffitt and Della (Keene) Proffitt. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Roy Proffitt; and one sister, Gladsie Whited.

 

     Troy is survived by his wife, Della (McGlothlin) Profitt; three sons, Keith and Kenneth Proffitt both of Lebanon, Virginia and Timothy Proffitt of Jacksonville, Florida; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive.

 

    He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a wonderful guitar player.

 

    Funeral services will be 2:00pm Sunday, July 28, 2019 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 5:oopm – 9:00pm Saturday and prior to the service on Sunday with special singing at 7:00pm Saturday evening. Larry Keene will officiate.      Frank Caldwell, age 72 of Wittensville, Kentucky passed away Thursday July 18, 2019 at the Salyersville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

     Born April 27, 1947 in Johnson County, he was the son of the late Elliott Culwell and Mary Lou McKenzie Culwell. In addition to his parents, Frank is preceded in death by a daughter, Charolett Caldwell; three brothers, James Larry Culwell, Randall J. Culwell and Elliott Leon Culwell; and one sister, Carolyn Castle.

     He is survived by his wife, Wanda (Scarberry) Caldwell; two sons, Frankie Caldwell of Prestonsburg, Kentucky and Earl Caldwell of Wittensville, Kentucky; two daughters, Susie Caldwell Gish of Louisville, Kentucky and Sharon Caldwell May of South Williamson, Kentucky; one brother, Ricky Caldwell of Tutor Key, Kentucky; four sisters, Nancy Brown of Ohio, Connie Fitch of Flatwoods, Kentucky, Rita Ann Vanhoose of Ohio and Alice June Vanhoose of Van Lear, Kentucky; and eight grandchildren also survive.

     Frank was a retired coal miner.

     Funeral services will be 2:00pm Sunday July 21, 2019 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Scarberry Family Cemetery at Lindy Branch. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 6:00pm – 9:00pm Friday, 9:00am – 9:00pm Saturday and until the time of service on Sunday. Jimmy Brown will officiate.         Clara Lucille Banks, age 80 of Van Lear, Kentucky formerly of Kokomo, Indiana passed away Wednesday July 17, 2019 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center in Paintsville.

     Born June 24, 1939 in Union County Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Lester and Alma (Slaughter) Damewood. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Ronnie and Terry Damewood; five sisters, Georgia Sue Culbertson, Charlotte Porter, Brenda Dowham, Ima Chapman and Joann Rosa; one daughter, Bethany Reeseman; and one grand daughter, Maranda Leigh Burt.

     Clara is survived by three children, Darlene and Ervin Ramey of Van Lear, Kentucky, Darrell and Karen Banks also of Van Lear, Kentucky and Randy and Mary Banks of Thelma, Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Sydney and Samuel Reeseman, Rusty Banks, Joshua Banks, Jeremy Banks, Jeff Ramey and Robin Berezansky; ten great grandchildren,  Jaxton and Jenson Banks, Peyton and Landon Berezansky, JT and Jacob Banks, Cassidy and Alexandria Ramey, Connor and Alaina Banks. Clara is also survived by one sister, Patricia Fouch of Kokomo, Indiana, and a host of nieces and nephews.  Clara was loved and will be missed by all.

     Funeral services will be 11:00am Saturday, July 20, 2019 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville, Kentucky. Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 5:00pm – 9:00pm Thursday, 9:00am – 9:00pm Friday and until the time of service on Saturday. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Paul Wayne Browning and Roger Hill will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home.

     James E. Baldwin, age 88 of Leander, passed away Friday, July 12, 2019 at his residence. Born January 22, 1931 in Johnson County, Kentucky he was the son of the late Ray Baldwin and Dicie Hitchcock Baldwin. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two sons, Lonald David Baldwin and Jerry D. Baldwin; two brothers, Raymond Baldwin and Mitchell Baldwin; three sisters, Mary Louise Blair, Okie Etchel Caudill, and Thelma Daniels.

     He is survived by his wife, Retta Blair Baldwin; five sons: James M. Baldwin, Dwight D. Baldwin and wife Jennifer, Larry K. Baldwin, Terry L. Baldwin, Anthony P. Baldwin, all of Leander; one sister, Jewell Spradlin and husband Bill of Manassas, Virginia. Five grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive.

     Funeral services will be held 1:00pm Monday, July 15, 2019 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Brown Cemetery at Leander. Hobert E. May, Cecil Adams, and David A. Baldwin will officiate. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Saturday from 5:00pm-9:00pm and on Sunday from 2:00pm-9:00pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the funeral home to assist with funeral expenses. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home.

     Rosa Fields, age 92, of Kermit, WV went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 8, 2019. Rosa was born December 23, 1926, to the late Vess and Alsie (Brewer) Spaulding, also of Kermit, WV. She was preceded in death by one son, James Muncy, her husband Haskel Fields, her first husband William Muncy, and three brothers, John, Gideon and William Spaulding.

     Rosa leaves behind two brothers, Cecil and  Andy Spaulding, both of Kermit, WV, and two sisters, Margarette Garland of Kermit, WV and Polly Porter of Akron, OH.

     She is survived by eleven children, Julius (Donna) Muncy of Columbus, OH, Cecil (Kathryn) Muncy of Paintsville, KY, Earley Muncy of Louisa, KY, Richard (Teresa) Muncy of Crum, WV, Clyde (Barbara) Muncy of Paintsville, KY, and Matthew (Julie) Muncy of Crum, WV, Hazel (Boyd) Marcum, of Kermit, WV, Martha Maynard of Inez, KY, Nora Endicott of Kermit, WV, Phyllis Smith of Inez, KY, and Mary Horn of Kermit, WV, as well as a host of grandchildren.

     Rosa was a faithful member of the Golden Springs Freewill Baptist Church, at Kermit, WV.

     Funeral services will be held 1:00pm Thursday, July 11, 2019 at the Golden Springs Freewill Baptist Church at Kermit, West Virginia. Ken Allen, Daniel Perry, and Billy Messer will officiate. Friends may visit at the church on Tuesday after 5:00pm, all day Wednesday, and prior to services on Thursday. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home.

     Imogene Ward Overpeck, age 75, formerly of Boonscamp, Kentucky passed away at Simulcast Hospice Care Center in St. Petersburg, Florida.     

     Born January 12, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Earl & Goldie Ward. In addition to her parents, Imogene is preceded in death by a brother, Earl Ward Jr.; and son Gary Holbrook.     

     Surviving is her husband, Clarence (Chuck) Overpeck; one son, Michael A. Young and wife Janie; grandchildren: Blake Jarrell, Isaiah, Peyton, Makalie and Xander Young and Shaun Holbrook.
