  Linda Lee (Ward) Smith, age 72 of Paintsville, Kentucky passed away Sunday, February 28, 2021 at the Kettering Medical Center in Kettering, Ohio after an extended illness. Linda was born July 24, 1948 in Paintsville, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Faye Ratliff Ward of Tipp City, Ohio and the late Arby Ward. On August 20, 1967 she married James “CatTail” Smith at Meally, Kentucky. To this union two children were born: Chris Smith and wife, Staci of Flat Gap, Kentucky and Shawn Smith of Paintsville, Kentucky.

     Linda was converted September 21, 1964 and baptized September 28, 1964 by Elder, Tom Sammons and Elder, Homer L. Preston. She remained a member of the Buffalo United Baptist Church until her death.

     She is preceded in death by her father, Arby Ward {April 1, 2015}, and her husband, James “CatTail” Smith {November 17, 2020}.

     She is survived by her mother, Faye Ratliff Ward of Tipp City, Ohio; one brother, James “Jim” Ward and wife, Debbie of Tipp City, Ohio; two grandsons: Zachery Smith and Trey Clay; and one granddaughter, Kelly Smith. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. Linda was a loving mother, wife, and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.

     Funeral services will be held 11:00am Friday, March 5, 2021 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville, Kentucky. Chris Rowland will officiate. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00-8:00pm and on Friday after 9:00am until time of services at 11:00am.      Linda Cheryl (Bentley) Fannin, age 54 of West Van Lear, Kentucky passed away Saturday, February 27, 2021 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
     Born May 4, 1966 in Rowan County, she was the daughter of Cecil and Carolyn (Gibson) Bentley of Hager Hill, Kentucky. In addition to her parents, Cheryl is survived by her husband, Paul Fannin; one son, Travis Paul Fannin of West Van Lear, Kentucky, one daughter, Chelsea Stone, and her husband Josh of Georgetown, Kentucky; one brother, Michael Bentley, and his wife Christina of Staffordsville, Kentucky; and two grandchildren, Joslyn Stone and Karlee Stone. She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Britt and Eva Gibson and Louie and Monie Bentley; mother and father in law, Margie and Southie Fannin.
     Cheryl was a member of Auxier Freewill Baptist Church.
     Funeral services will be held 2:00pm Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at the Auxier Freewill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Gethsemane Gardens, Prestonsburg. Bobby Joe Spencer and Southie Fannin, Jr will officiate. Friends may visit the church from 2:00pm to 9:00pm Tuesday and from 9:00am until the time of service on Wednesday.      Barbara Maria Zeigler, 52, passed away Friday, Feb 26, 2021. She was born in Columbus, Ohio on October 17, 1968 to Gaylene Kendrick and the late Roger Anthony Hall. She is survived by her life mate, Chuck Hummel; children, Helene Steed, Carlene Chu, Jessica Augur, Justin Chu; grandchildren, Chris Casey, Allison Motter, Lillie Herbst, Emily and Dean Augur, Arabella and Briella Chu.
     Barbara was a patient, kind, gentle, generous and forgiving person. She loved God, her family, camping, the mountains, and later in life found an exuberant joy in painting.
     Celebration of Life services for Barbara Maria Zeigler will be updated as soon as they become available. Arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home.

     William “Billy” Colvin, age 76 of Flat Gap, Kentucky passed away Monday, February 22, 2021 at the Pikeville Medical Center. Born January 23, 1945 in Flat Gap, Kentucky he was the son of the late Johnny Preston and Hazel Lemaster Preston. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

     Billy is survived by his loving wife, Rose Napier Colvin; one daughter, Hazel Colvin McDavid of Paintsville, Kentucky; one sister, Lois McKamey of Dayton, Ohio; two grandchildren, Justin Morman and Timothy Colvin; and four great grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, family members, and friends also survive.

     Funeral services will be held 1:00pm Friday, February 26, 2021 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Lemaster Cemetery at Flat Gap, Kentucky.      Betty Katherine Jones, age 83 of Van Lear, Kentucky passed away Sunday, February 21, 2021 at the Prestonsburg Healthcare Center in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. Born September 3, 1937 in Boyd County, Kentucky she was the daughter of the late William Kirkpatrick Jones and Mina Mae Evans Jones. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by one brother, William Ernest Jones; one sister, Anna Ruth Jones Butcher; and one nephew, James Darrell Butcher.

     Betty is survived by several nieces and nephews: Anna Louise Butcher Miller, Sharon Sue Butcher Williams, Kathy Elaine Butcher Young, Connie Jean Butcher Young, Gayle Anne Jones Leighton, Geofrey Alan Jones; great nieces and great nephews: Tymsone Young, Amanda Carol Miller, Talletha Young, and Britney Leann Williams.

     Palmer Gillispie, age 84 of East Point, Kentucky passed away Friday, February 19, 2021 at the King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Kentucky. Born May 30, 1936 in Johnson County, Kentucky he was the son of the late James P. Gillispie and Virgie Conley Gillispie. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by four sisters: Betty Green, Eileen Davis, Donna Rose Gillispie, and Joyce Ann Gillispie.

     Palmer is survived by his wife, Lois Mills Gillispie; one son, Timothy Gillispie of East Point, Kentucky; one daughter, Robin Sparks and husband, Jim of Paintsville, Kentucky; two brothers: James Paul Gillispie of Springfield, Ohio and Roger Allen Gillispie of Fairborn, Ohio, whom Palmer referred to as “Rogee” his best friend; two grandchildren: Andrea Sparks and Angela Hanson and husband, Lou; three great grandchildren: Payton, Myles, and Judah.

     Palmer was a proud retired veteran of the United States Navy. After his retirement from the United States Navy he moved his family back to Kentucky where he gained employment with Southeast Coal Company, Island Creek Coal, and Marco Mine Supply. During these years he made numerous friends of a lifetime.

     He retired from Marco Mine Supply in May 1998. He turned off his alarm and picked up his fishing rod. He spent many good days on the lake, but to Palmer his greatest accomplishment was his military service.

     In Cincinnati, Ohio in 1953 at the age of 17, Palmer Gillispie decided to answer the call and serve his country. Being too young to serve he lied about his age to enter in the United States Military Service in the U.S. Navy. He attended boot camp in Bainbridge, Maryland. Palmer achieved the rank of U.S. Navy Chief. TMC Gillispie, SS served on the USS Von Stuben, SSBN632 (Submarine) on both the gold and blue crew. TMC Gillispie quickly earned the respect of those who served under him as well as his commanding officers. When a crewman was put up for advancement, and they had Palmer's mentorship, they were automatically put up for that advancement. Gillispie had a shining reputation as a knowledgable teacher. TMC Gillispie served his country with honor and distinction on a nuclear submarine around the world for twenty years. His dedication to the sailors under him and to his country is a testimony to his character, talent and values which he embodied: HONOR, COURAGE and COMMITMENT. LOVE of Country, LOVE of GOD. May this legacy live on throughout the years.

     Sharon Aster (Witten) Conley, age 69 of Van Lear, Kentucky passed away Friday, February 19, 2021 at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
     Born September 17, 1951 in Port Clinton, Ohio she was the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson, Jr and Ruby Carol (Hayslett) Witten. In addition to her parents, Sharon is preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Michael Witten and Thomas Gerald Witten; and one sister, Carolyn Kay Witten.
     She is survived by her husband, Winfrey Conley; two daughters, Missy (Roy) Borders of Salyersville, Kentucky and Nicole (Bill) Stewart of Van Lear, Kentucky; two brothers, Cletus Joe (Dedra) Witten of Sitka, Kentucky, Ernest (Beverly) Witten of Union Mills, North Carolina; four sisters, Karen McClure of Sitka, Kentucky, Connie (Stanley) Blevins of Sitka, Kentucky, Berletta Sue (Roger) Thornhill of Urbana, Ohio and Paulette (Pete) Wilkins of Brooksville, Florida; four grandchildren, Hope Wells, Lakin Wells (fiance, Keegan Clevinger), Gage Salyer and Chris Stewart; and one great grandchild, Eleanor Stewart. Also surviving are three brothers and sisters-in-law, Howard (Christine) Conley, Con (Ann) Conley and Mike (Charolotte) Conley.

   Larry Stambaugh, age 47 of Staffordsville, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Born August 27, 1973 in Floyd County, Kentucky he is the son of Hershel Stambaugh and Barbara Franklin Stambaugh of East Point, Kentucky. He is preceded in death by one half-brother, Robbie Stambaugh.

     In addition to his parents, Larry is survived by his wife, Stephanie Trimble Stambaugh of Staffordsville, Kentucky; two daughters: Lindsay Stambaugh and Abbie Stambaugh, both of Staffordsville, Kentucky; one brother, Brian Stambaugh and wife, Jessica of Nippa, Kentucky; one half-brother, Russell Stambaugh and wife, Patty of Paintsville, Kentucky; one sister, Linda Stambaugh of East Point, Kentucky; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Danny and Kathy Trimble of Staffordsville, Kentucky. A host of family members and friends also survive.

     Jerri M. Tackett, age 75 of Staffordsville, Kentucky passed away Thursday, February 18, 2021 at the Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center in Paintsville, Kentucky. Born December 15, 1945 in Johnson County, Kentucky to the late Worthy Blevins and Linnie Mae (Stamper) Blevins. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Tackett {May 2, 2008}, three brothers: Ottie Blevins, George Blevins, and Harry Blevins; two sisters: Ella Gauze, and Lou Adkins.

     Jerri is survived by two sons: Thurman Dewayne Tackett and wife, Sabrina of Prestonsburg, Kentucky and Anthony Scott Tackett and wife, Tyra of Staffordsville, Kentucky; one brother, Jimmy Blevins and wife, Ilene of St. Maries, Idaho; one sister, Bonnie Webb and husband, Cletus of Ashland, Kentucky; two grandchildren: Aaron Tackett and Garrett Tackett; one great grandchild, Bodhi Scott Tackett; a special sister-in-law, Rosie Blevins; and a special niece, Jodie Blevins Senters.

     Glen “Buddy” Pelphrey, age 76 of Van Lear, Kentucky passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at the Pikeville Medical Center. Born October 29, 1944 in Johnson County, Kentucky to the late Glen Pelphrey and Ida Marie (Tackett) Pelphrey. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two sisters: Barb Vanhoose and Helen Harmon.

     He is survived by his wife, Patsy Murphy Pelphrey; two daughters: Betty Marie Pelphrey of Van Lear, Kentucky, Erica Dawn Pelphrey Lemaster and husband, Eric of Flat Gap, Kentucky; one brother, Hank Pelphrey of Paintsville, Kentucky; two sisters: Wanda Adkins of Ohio, and Mary Meek of Tutor Key, Kentucky; one grandson on the way. Also surviving is his companion dog, Buddy Spot.

     Buddy was a proud veteran of the United States Army.

     Graveside services will be held 11:00am Monday, February 22, 2021 at the Johnson County Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsville, Kentucky. Roger Hill will officiate.      Tommy Ray McKenzie, age 65 of Flat Gap, Kentucky passed away Thursday, February 11, 2021 at the Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center in Paintsville, Kentucky. Born July 17, 1955 in Wurtland, West Virginia to the late Robert Douglas McKenzie and Gladys Pennington McKenzie. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Patty Ramey McKenzie; one brother, John McKenzie; and two sisters: Judy McKenzie and Sandy Vanhoose.

     He is survived by two sons: Kenny McKenzie (Faith Ramey) of River, Kentucky, Robert (Betty) McKenzie of Flat Gap, Kentucky; one daughter: Carla Cantrell of Flat Gap, Kentucky; one sister, Kathy Holbrook of Paintsville, Kentucky; special nephew, Sam Ramey; two special nieces: Kelly Dale and Destiney Curtis; twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

     Donnie Daniels, age 71 of Thealka, Kentucky passed away Sunday, February 7, 2021 at his daughter's residence in Meally, Kentucky. Born July 14, 1949 in Johnson County, Kentucky to the late Lawrence Daniels and Mary Borders Daniels. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by three brothers: Doug Daniels, Bob Daniels, and James Daniels.

     Donnie is survived by one daughter, Mary Daniels and husband, Michael Blair of Meally, Kentucky; and one sister, Wanda Cantrell of Paintsville, Kentucky.

     Funeral services will be held 2:00pm Wednesday, February 10, 2021 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Daniels Family Cemetery at Thealka.      James Michael “Buddy” McKenzie, age 69 of Paintsville, Kentucky passed away Saturday, February 6, 2021 at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Born May 30, 1951 in Johnson County, Kentucky to the late James Arthur “Archie” McKenzie and Oma Salyers McKenzie. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two sisters, Barbara Vanhoose and Dora Brady.

     Buddy is survived by his loving wife, Pauline Damron McKenzie whom he married on June 22, 1970. Two children: son, Christopher M. McKenzie and wife, Tamela of Paintsville; daughter, Chrystal M. McKenzie of Paintsville; one sister, Francis McKenzie Smith of Paintsville; two grandchildren, Lauren Nicole McKenzie and her fiance, John Bargo, and Zia Keriden McKenzie.

     He was a proud and faithful member of the Rockhouse Freewill Baptist Church.

     Avonelle Conley, age 89 of East Point, Kentucky passed away Friday, February 5, 2021 at her daughter's residence.

     Born August 24, 1931 in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Judd Rice and Margaret “Maggie” Music Rice. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, John P. Conley (January 27, 2018); five brothers, Samuel K. Rice, Thomas J. Rice, John D. Rice, Verlie C. Rice and James Roy Rice; and three sisters, Beatrice Johnson, Vertrice Cartmell and Lois Richardson.

     Avonell is survived by one daughter, Sharon Conley, and her husband Jim of East Point, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Kevin (Angie) Conley and Kelli (Mark) Holbrook; four grandchildren, Dillon Conley, Tyler Holbrook, Drew Conley and Brandon Holbrook; a special nephew, Tommy Rice; and several nieces, nephews and many friends also survive,

     Mitchell Mollette, age 85 of Prestonsburg, Kentucky formerly of Johnson County, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at Cornerstone Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia.

     Born January 31, 1936 in Johnson County, he was the son of the late Ali Mollette and Ada Mollette. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, James Mollette and Sherman Mollette; and one grandson, Johnny Ross.

     He is survived by three sons, James Mollette of Wittensville, Kentucky, Kenny Mollette of Meally, Kentucky and Austin Mollette of Prestonsburg, Kentucky; one daughter, Sandy Hundall of Meally, Kentucky; ten grandchildren and several great grandchildren also survive.

     Mr. Mollette was retired from Paintsville Utilities and was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force.

     Funeral services will be held 1:00pm Monday, February 8, 2021 in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Mollette Family Cemetery, Meally.      John Wesley Dickerson, age 56 of Van Lear, Kentucky passed away Thursday, February 4, 2021 at the Pikeville Medical Center.

Born November 2, 1964 in Johnson County, he was the son of the late Albert Burchett and Fannie Dickerson. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his step father, Tony Johnson.

     Mr. Dickerson is survived by his wife, Patricia (Wells) Dickerson; three sons, Johnathan Dickerson and his wife Cigie of West Van Lear, Kentucky, Wesley Dickerson, and his wife Brittani of Swamp Branch, Kentucky, and Adam Dickerson of Van Lear, Kentucky; one sister, Amanda Dickerson of Prestonsburg, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Hudson Dickerson, Chloe Dickerson, Austin and Bentley.

Friends may visit the Phelps & Son Funeral Home from 5:00pm to 9:00pm Saturday and prior to the service on Sunday. Paul Wayne Browning will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home.
